The Erasmus+ project Taste of Diversity was developed against the backdrop of current societal developments in Europe that particularly affect young people. According to the TUI Youth Study 2023, many young people view their future with growing concern. Issues such as the climate crisis, wars in and around Europe, increasing social division, as well as the ongoing challenges of migration and integration, strongly shape their outlook. At the same time, polarization and the rise of anti-democratic attitudes are becoming more evident across European societies. This situation makes it essential to create spaces for dialogue, encounter, and mutual understanding, where young people can share their experiences, learn from each other, and jointly develop perspectives for a more inclusive and solidarity-based future. Young people with migration or refugee backgrounds are particularly affected by discrimination, exclusion, and societal tensions. In all partner countries involved in the project, they experience structural disadvantages in both education and the labor market, are more frequently confronted with racism and prejudice, and face a higher risk of being targeted by anti-democratic ideologies. The Stiftung für Engagement und Bildung e.V. and its partner organizations from Italy, Poland, Bulgaria, and Türkiye recognized these challenges within their own networks and identified an urgent need for action. In response, they developed Taste of Diversity – a project that not only addresses cultural diversity as a theme but makes it tangible, empowering young people to view it as a valuable resource for their personal development and their communities. Food was deliberately chosen as both the thematic focus and methodological tool of the project. Food is more than sustenance: it is a cultural asset that carries memory, identity, and tradition. Every meal tells stories of origin, migration, and transformation. By cooking and sharing meals together, barriers can be broken down, trust can be built, and bridges can be created between people of different backgrounds. Food offers a low-threshold entry point, enables encounters on equal footing, and opens up conversations on deeper social issues such as belonging, discrimination, or sustainability. The overarching objectives of the project can be summarized as follows: Promoting intercultural dialogue and respect Young people from five countries were to be given the opportunity to get to know each other, reflect on their diverse cultural backgrounds, and discover commonalities through food. The aim was to reduce prejudices, foster empathy, and create awareness of the enrichment that comes with cultural diversity. Strengthening resilience against discrimination and radicalization For disadvantaged young people with migration experience in particular, it was important to create positive experiences of their own culture and traditions. The project aimed to boost their self-confidence, help them process experiences of discrimination, and introduce them to democratic values such as tolerance, participation, and solidarity. Developing social, intercultural, and entrepreneurial skills Through hands-on workshops and cooking activities, participants acquired key skills: teamwork, communication, conflict resolution, organization, as well as first insights into project management and entrepreneurial thinking. Thus, the project fostered not only intercultural but also practical professional skills. Creating spaces for self-efficacy Many participants were accustomed to being addressed primarily as “recipients” of support rather than as active contributors. Taste of Diversity deliberately countered this by enabling them to take responsibility: in planning and implementing cooking evenings, in organizing a public “Kitchen for All” (KüFA) in Leipzig, and in developing their own follow-up projects in their home countries. Networking partner organizations and transferring best practices Through the preparatory visit in Leipzig and the close cooperation during the youth exchange, the partner organizations were able to learn from one another and expand their expertise in inclusive youth education. The KüFA format – as an open, low-threshold community kitchen – served as a best-practice example from Germany and inspired partners to adapt similar initiatives in their local contexts. In summary, the project pursued the vision of bringing together young people with and without migration experience, creating spaces for exchange and empowerment, and strengthening them in their role as active shapers of an open, diverse, and solidarity-based society. Taste of Diversity thus combined individual empowerment (self-confidence, skills), social impact (dialogue, participation, resilience), and a European perspective (networking, shared values) in a unique and sustainable way.
