Objectives

Sustainability is increasingly recognized as a crucial factor in modern practices, with many businesses and organizations now integrating environmentally friendly principles into their operations. Products are increasingly made from sustainable materials, packaging is being reduced and recycled, and there is a notable rise in demand for second-hand items, as seen with platforms like Vinted. Additionally, the Erasmus+ program emphasizes sustainability and green travel to minimize the environmental impacts of mobility projects. Fast fashion brands are slowly incorporating organic and recycled materials, and the EU's directive on banning single-use plastics represents a significant step towards reducing plastic waste and raising public awareness about environmental damage. However, despite these advancements, the integration of sustainability into daily life and mindset remains inconsistent. Our organization adheres to environmental principles, with core members practicing responsible waste sorting and sustainable living. Yet, we have observed that for many young people across Europe, sustainability is still not a common topic, and habits related to recycling and daily environmental practices require significant improvement. During our international projects, we provide multiple-use products and separate bins for waste sorting, but we initially believed that simply introducing participants to sorting bins and basic recycling rules would suffice. To our surprise, we discovered that many young people, particularly those not specifically involved in environmental projects, lack awareness about sustainability, recycling practices, and environmental-friendly habits. We recognized that there is still a long journey ahead. Although our country and businesses are advancing in sustainability, individuals across Europe—let alone globally—still lack awareness about how their everyday behaviors impact the environment and often do not have well-formed sustainable habits. The needs of young people regarding sustainability are not fully addressed by current initiatives, highlighting a crucial gap in their environmental education and practices. Many young individuals lack a deep understanding of effective recycling and waste sorting techniques. Observations from our currently implemented YE projects revealrd that mere awareness of recycling principles often falls short, leading to improper sorting of waste and contamination issues. Additionally, there is a prevalent tendency towards convenience-oriented behavior, such as the use of single-use plastics and disposable products, which contributes significantly to environmental pollution. This behavior suggests that young people may not fully grasp the longterm impacts of their choices or lack practical alternatives. Furthermore, there is a noticeable deficiency in awareness about green travel practices, with many opting for more convenient but less sustainable travel options. This gap indicates a need for targeted educational interventions that not only provide theoretical knowledge but also offer practical, hands-on experience to foster sustainable habits. Addressing these needs is essential to equip young people with the skills and understanding necessary to integrate sustainability into their daily lives effectively. These observations underline that changing mindsets regarding sustainability and environmental protection is still a significant challenge. Together with our partners, we recognized that youth exchanges presented an excellent opportunity to address these issues, raise awareness, and shift the mindset of young Europeans towards more sustainable practices and habits. Project Goal: Raise awareness of the importance of sustainable and environmentally friendly practices in daily life and contribute to creating a clean and waste-free environment by arranging a youth exchange from 23rd of April to 1st of May, 2025, in Kaunas, Lithuania. Objectives: 1. To analyze the core reasons that prevent young people from adopting environmentally friendly and sustainable habits and lifestyles in their daily routines. 2. To introduce the benefits and methods of waste sorting, global practices, and recycling rules applied in different countries, and encourage participants and their local communities to implement these practices. 3. To familiarize participants with the sustainability priorities of the Erasmus+ program and the environmental commitments of EU countries. 4. To learn about green travel practices and how to arrange environmentally friendly trips.
