This project was designed to respond to the urgent need for hope and resilience in today’s challenging times. The last years and especially based on the research done within the project "Youth Work for Rehabilitation of Young people Affected by War and Armed Conflicts”, where YPAN and Peace Up! were partners, it became obvious that youth workers are in need of support in building resilience, self-care and general training on dealing with conflicts and traumatic events. Furthermore, based on the research from the university in Bristol, findings demonstrated that resilience is not an inherent character trait, rather the product of the external support systems surrounding the individual and their interaction with them are creating a lot of impact to young people living in conflict-affected areas, under stress provoked by wars, pandemic and similar trauma and stress provoked events. In response to that, we felt there is a need for building communities grounded in resilience and collective care. We understood that we need more ways of coming together and supporting each other in a trauma-informed way, especially for people who work in challenging, high-stress environments such as youth workers. We believed that by starting from ourselves and strengthening our inner capacities then we can create a more sustainable and effective foundation on promoting peace on a wider scale. Incorporating a holistic approach, this training course integrated mind, body and nature. We introduced inter- and intrapersonal tools that support both personal and professional development. This brought a more sustainable and impactful approach to the project. The spotted needs were translated in the following aim and objectives: The aim of the "It starts with us" project was to develop competences of 25 youth workers to establish a system of support for their practice in conflict transformation through building skills of trauma-informed practice and resilience, so that they could translate them in their local context. OBJECTIVES: 1. to find common ground in understanding of youth work in transforming conflicts and challenges in this field; 2. to develop participants understanding of trauma-informed and conflict sensitivity practice in youth work, its role, and boundaries required to effectively support young people; 3. to help participants reflect on their inner value systems and sense of purpose to deepen their self-awareness and enable them to support youth. 4. to strengthen resilience skills through tools for self-care and self-awareness, including somatic awareness and emotional self and co-regulation; 5.to create space for peer learning about tools for supporting young people in building resilience, with focus on emotional literacy, connection with nature and resonant healing; 6. to develop a practical system of support among participants based on empathy groups; 7. to plan at least 5 follow-up projects where participants apply the tools and practices learned in their local community and act as multipliers of resilience-building methods. With this project, we wanted to create a supportive foundation for youth workers to develop resilience and trauma-informed practices that they can share into their work with young people in their organizations and local community. Besides that, by focusing on personal, self care but also on professional development, this project contributed to the broader aims of the Erasmus+ program and added to active citizenship by starting from youth workers themselves. We do believed that by equipping participants with those skills and competences, and by them becoming inner & outer peace multipliers, we could foster a future culture of peace all over Europe. Finally, in the YPAN and Peace Up!, among core values we have sustainability and we believe in peace on 3 levels: inner, social and environmental. Therefore, we aimed with this project to promote sustainability and peace with the environment as well.
