The "Cultural Voices Training: Empowerment and Mental Health" is an initiative focused on addressing critical needs in youth work: mental health and empowerment through self-reflection/expression. We want to concentrate on the importance of equipping youth workers, social workers, and individuals engaged with young people with the necessary tools and skills to handle the complexities they encounter during their work. This project aims to address the difficulty youth workers often face when navigating challenging or conflict-laden situations during their encounters with young people. Many youth workers struggle with their own mental health, and this can impact their ability to effectively lead, guide, and support young people. By focusing on stress management, conflict resolution, and empowerment, we aim to provide practical methods that can directly improve both the personal well-being of youth workers and their leadership abilities, as well as the participation of young people in youth project, who carry with them a "backpack" of personal experiences and difficult backgrounds (psychological, social, economic etc. issues). The two-part training, held in Greece and Germany, focuses on empowering youth workers in two interconnected and interactive parts. The first part emphasizes in strengthening their own presence and leadership skills, ensuring they feel confident and supported in their role as mentors and educators through methods like democracy-building and Theater of the Oppressed. The second part shifts focus towards empowerment, equipping youth workers with the tools they need to help young people deal with their mental well-being, express their opinions or emotions, take active roles in their communities by starting as participants in youth projects. This will happen with methods like non-violent-communication. These approaches aim to foster a stronger sense of personal development among youth workers. This, in turn, will allow them to better support and uplift the young people they work with. Mental health sub-topics such as stress management and conflict resolution will be central to the training, as we recognize the need for youth workers to be equipped with effective strategies for handling these areas in their daily interactions with young people (for example young people staying in their language/social "bubble", young people facing stress situations like panic attacks or feeling overwhelmed during a workshop). The goal of this project is to enhance the overall quality of youth work by promoting mental well-being and empowerment. By creating a practical guide of tried methods and approaches, this can be used both during and after youth exchanges, but also in a more broaden spectrum such as community building initiatives, guided from people who want to develop youth work in general. We hope to provide a lasting resource for youth workers, helping them foster healthier, more supportive environments for themselves and their colleagues and also young people across different cultural and social contexts - especially when having disadvantaged backgrounds, such as migration, geographical isolation, unemployment, language barriers etc.
