Objectives

The project "Empowering Youth for Digital Citizenship" was designed to respond to the urgent need for stronger digital skills, media literacy, and democratic engagement among young people in Germany, North Macedonia, Serbia, and Türkiye. Our main aim was to equip young participants with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to become active, informed, and responsible digital citizens. Through this project, we wanted to strengthen non-formal learning opportunities that support youth participation in democratic life, while addressing the growing challenges of disinformation and low digital literacy in our partner countries. By involving both youth and youth organizations, we worked to build a supportive learning environment that empowers young people to take an active role in shaping their societies. The objectives of the project focused on several key areas. Firstly, we aimed to enhance the digital competences of young people, especially in countries like North Macedonia and Serbia where basic digital skills remain limited. Secondly, we wanted to raise awareness about the dangers of disinformation, particularly in Türkiye and Germany, where large numbers of young internet users are regularly exposed to fake news. Thirdly, we promoted youth leadership and democratic engagement by providing space for peer learning, local action, and cross-cultural dialogue. In addition, we aimed to build stronger cooperation between youth organizations in different countries, supporting them in developing high-quality resources and strategies to deliver impactful digital education. This helped ensure that the impact of the project extended beyond the direct participants. The project also addressed the specific needs of the different groups involved. For youth organizations, we focused on capacity building, cross-border networking, and resource development to strengthen their ability to deliver digital and civic education. For young people directly involved in preparing and implementing activities, we created meaningful learning opportunities where they could develop practical skills, take leadership roles, and learn from their peers. For the broader group of young people reached through project activities, we focused on critical thinking, resilience against disinformation, and active participation in civic life. Through these efforts, we aimed to create long-term positive change by supporting young people to become more confident, digitally aware, and democratically active members of their communities.
