Objectives

With Section 19 of the Brandenburg Municipal Constitution, municipalities and districts have been required since 2018 to ensure the participation and involvement rights of all children and young people at the local level. Since then, the number of youth councils, the number of active young people, as well as open and new forms of participation, have steadily increased. The goal of integrating young people into local government action is gradually being brought to life. However, young people still need significant support in areas such as committee knowledge, democracy, sustainability, the EU, gender, funding, etc. The demand and interest from young people in the municipalities exceed the available advisory capacities. So far, there is no peer approach involving 'experienced youth council veterans.' Target groups with special support needs are difficult to reach. The range of topics is mainly limited to committees. We aim to address these shortcomings through the peer-leader approach.
