Objectives

The purpose of the project was to strengthen young people's democratic confidence, knowledge of the European Union, and motivation to participate actively in democratic debate. In particular, we aimed to engage young people from FGU institutions, continuation schools (efterskoler), and secondary schools (gymnasiums) across Denmark, including young people with minority backgrounds who are often underrepresented in political discussions. The project was based on the need to make democratic participation and EU-related topics more accessible and relevant to young people. Many young people perceive politics as complex and feel that they lack the knowledge or confidence needed to engage in debates and democratic processes. Therefore, we sought to create inclusive and informal learning environments where young people could develop their personal, social, and citizenship competences. The project's main objective was to increase young people's understanding of the EU’s values and democratic processes, while strengthening their belief that they can make a difference as active citizens. Through peer-to-peer learning and non-formal educational methods, we aimed to make European topics more relatable, understandable, and engaging. To achieve these objectives, we developed and delivered five EU workshops at educational institutions across Denmark. The workshops were facilitated by young democracy ambassadors and were based on interactive activities such as human bingo, fishbowl debates, and interactive student presentations. These activities provided participants with opportunities to discuss current European issues, acquire and share knowledge about the EU’s six values, and strengthen their democratic engagement. The project also aimed to strengthen the social dimension of democratic participation by creating safe spaces for dialogue and community-building among young people. At the same time, we developed educational and engagement materials that can be used in future activities and help ensure a lasting impact. To reach an even wider audience, we also carried out digital outreach activities on social media, where young democracy ambassadors shared knowledge about the EU and European topics in an accessible and youth-oriented format. Overall, the project's goal was to strengthen young people's participation in democracy and foster a greater understanding of the European Union, including the EU’s six values, among a broad and diverse group of young people.
