Objectives

The project “The Future of Democracy in Europe” aimed to engage young people aged 15–18 in democratic participation and active citizenship through non-formal learning. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, our organization has observed that many young people no longer engage in communities in the same way. Increased individualization has led to a decreased understanding of others, and both young people and society at large need youth to take part in inclusive communities and thus take responsibility for their own and each other's well-being. Based on four of the European Youth Goals, the project sought to increase young people's understanding of democracy, strengthen their civic engagement, promote critical thinking, and create an inclusive community. Additionally, there was a desire for the young participants to develop an interest in learning more about democracy and to contribute to future projects and events. Choosing democracy and a shared future for Europe as the project's focus turned out to be even more timely and relevant than initially anticipated.
