Objectives

The main objective of the Mental Health Without Borders - Italy project was to dismantle the stigma regarding the topic of mental health. Despite increased societal awareness about mental health and related topics, there are still many stigmas and barriers that people face when they try to discuss the topic of mental health or try to receive help for their mental health concerns. The project aimed to use non-formal learning techniques to equip young participants with the skills and confidence to engage in open, honest dialogues about mental health, either with their peers, family, policy makers or mental health professionals. At the same time, the project aimed to give information on mental health services in local and general contexts, fostering an environment of inclusivity and awareness. Developing personal skills was also core to the project, in order to have a sustained impact and application of the knowledge gained. Participants were encouraged to delve deeper into skill acquisition, learning from others, and implementing mental health routines in their own lives. Another objective was to bring together young Europeans to illuminate cross-cultural disparities in mental health information and care. By exploring these differences, the project gave access to new information and perspectives, helping to cultivate a deeper understanding of the nuanced nature of mental health on a global scale. With increased knowledge and skills, the project also had the objective to explore how young individuals can become positive catalysts in the mental health landscape in their own communities, workplaces, or educational institutions. The project served as a platform for sharing best practices and exchanging insights, fostering a collaborative approach to creatively addressing mental health concerns of young people at large, as one of the generations facing particular mental health challenges. A concrete goal was to empower participants to establish their own youth initiatives, becoming advocates for mental health awareness and resilience. Our project also touched upon the broader context of the multiple crises young people face today, including uncertainty related to international conflicts. The project’s objectives also encompassed increasing international solidarity and inclusion. The inclusion of Ukrainian participants is a deliberate effort to facilitate discussions on the integration of Ukrainian youth, either as refugees in our home countries, or through promoting international solidarity and unity as a core component of the European identity.
