Objectives

The main goal of the project "Activate Your Mind! Learn to Think Critically" was to strengthen critical thinking and media literacy skills among young people, particularly Russian-speaking students in Ida-Virumaa. We aimed to equip them with the tools to recognize misinformation, understand media influence, and develop the confidence to engage in fact-based public discussions. Our key objectives were: To improve critical thinking and media literacy by teaching students how to analyze media content, verify sources, and identify fake news and propaganda. To promote active citizenship by encouraging young people to engage with democratic values and use their critical thinking skills to make informed decisions. To empower youth as peer educators who can share what they've learned with classmates, family, and the wider community. Overall, we consider the project successful. While the second half was more challenging due to time constraints—mainly because of the 2024–2025 school year transition to Estonian-language instruction, which made students very busy—we adapted by continuing the project through collaboration with Kohtla-Järve Youth Center (Noortekeskus). There, we held additional workshops, debates, Kahoot quizzes, and critical thinking quests. The highlight of the project was the study visit to Tallinn, where students visited the TV House and Radio House (ERR). They had the unique opportunity to ask questions about news production and critical thinking directly to journalist and host Aleksandr Zhemzhurov (ERR), which made a strong impression on the participants and deepened their understanding of how professional media operates.
