Objectives

The core ambition of the EcoFit: Exercise with Sustainable Means project was to address two significant, interconnected challenges facing today’s youth: the rise of sedentary lifestyles and the urgent need for increased environmental consciousness. These issues were particularly pressing in the wider rural context of Filiates, Greece, an area affected by limited access to structured physical activity opportunities and by broader environmental pressures influencing public health. The local community experienced increasing health concerns linked to inactive lifestyles and reduced environmental awareness. The project responded to these challenges by fostering a holistic approach to youth well-being, integrating physical activity with sustainability and environmental stewardship. From a youth work practice perspective, the primary objective was to empower young people to take control of their health and become active contributors to environmental sustainability. The project educated participants on how personal well-being was directly linked to the well-being of the planet. This was achieved through a series of workshops, outdoor activities, and educational sessions that combined physical exercise with environmentally sustainable practices. Through this approach, the project promoted healthier lifestyle choices that simultaneously reduced the environmental footprint of physical activities. For example, young people learned about eco-friendly sports practices, such as reducing waste and carbon emissions during recreational activities, and adopted green transportation methods such as cycling and walking. Another key objective was to create a generation of young environmental advocates. By equipping participants with practical knowledge and tools, the project instilled a sense of responsibility among them. Participants learned how to implement sustainable practices in their everyday lives and, more importantly, how to disseminate these ideas within their communities. In this way, the project not only improved the physical health of the participants but also inspired them to become ambassadors of sustainability, capable of driving positive change in their local communities. Furthermore, the project aimed to foster social inclusion, particularly for young people from rural areas who did not have equal opportunities for engagement in physical or environmental education. By focusing on participants who were either directly affected by poor health habits or who lived in areas vulnerable to climate change, such as Greece, Italy, Cyprus, and Portugal, the project addressed both the individual and collective impact of these challenges. This approach strengthened connections between young people from different countries and emphasized the shared responsibility for environmental and health-related challenges across Europe. Ultimately, the project created a transferable model of youth work that integrated health, education, and sustainability and demonstrated strong potential for replication in other regions and contexts.
