The phenomenon of fan violence and the spread of hate speech are prominent and recurring topics of discussion in the daily lives of young people, significantly affecting their participation in sports activities and, more broadly, their relationship with sports. Constant exposure to incidents of violence through social media, as well as the language that accompanies them, combined with adolescents’ intense need to form a socially acceptable identity and the fast pace of life that limits critical reflection, have highlighted the need for targeted interventions. In this context, and through the implementation of the “Game Changers Combating Hate Speech in Sports”, a project aimed at actively contributing to organizations’ efforts to combat fan violence and hate speech, through collective action, we sought to raise awareness among adolescents regarding the phenomenon of fan violence and hate speech in sports, an issue that directly affects their daily lives, both in the physical and digital worlds, and to provide them with the necessary tools to design their own initiatives and be more active at the local level. Hellenic Youth Participation, with three active teenagers groups in Athens, organized a youth exchange in July 2025 as part of its work on hate speech and anti-bullying, bringing together 42 participants (34 teenagers, 7 group leaders, and 1 facilitator) from Greece, North Macedonia, Italy, Spain, Hungary, Poland, and Croatia, with the aim of acquiring knowledge, skills, and attitudes against hate speech and hooliganism, as well as violence in sports. The project was based on the identified NEEDS OF YOUNG PEOPLE for: -understanding and combating hate speech and fan violence; -taking initiatives and designing actions with social impact; -opportunities for intercultural exchange and cooperation; and the NEEDS OF THE PARTNERS for: -enhancing knowledge and practices regarding hate speech; -creating European mobility opportunities for adolescents; -implementing local actions; -strengthening international collaborations Thus, the MAIN FOCUSES of the exchange were combating hate speech and fan violence in sports, intercultural cooperation, and launching initiatives through the planning of actions. The OBJECTIVES of the project were as follows: -Promoting the prevention of radicalization in sports and raising awareness of issues related to hate speech in sports -Highlighting the importance of young people’s mental and physical well-being as a counterbalancing factor against the expression of violence and hate. -Strengthening everyday practices and critical thinking regarding hate speech and increasing resilience -Creating 7 local initiatives with social impact and taking the lead on projects -Strengthening participants’ personal, professional, and interpersonal skills.
