Our project is a youth exchange framed within the social circus as a tool for personal development for young people at risk of social exclusion and with functional diversity. We work in a network with several youth and functional diversity organisations in Valencia, carrying out activities around circus and performing arts, in order to contribute to their physical and emotional wellbeing. Both Sargantana Circ Inclusiu and Compagnia Elefanti are organisations that promote social circus projects and organise activities for young people in our cities. We have been working for many years in local social circus projects and we have carried out some European youth exchanges for this purpose. Every year different young people go through our projects, so the project achieves everytime new aspects and it’s so important that we’re able to get young people from different backgrounds and socio-economic contexts. Through the circus we work on those needs, skills, aptitudes and attitudes that contribute to the personal development of young people at risk of social exclusion. Psychomotor skills, empathy, self-esteem, self-confidence, commitment, belonging to a group, perseverance, tolerance to frustration. Social Circus began to be used as an educational resource in the 90s in Scandinavian countries, where nowadays Social Circus is strongly linked to the UNIVERSITY environment. It has been popularised by Cirque du Soleil, who collaborate with numerous Social Circus centres around the world. Although we have examples in cities such as Madrid and Barcelona, hardly any projects have been carried out in the rest of Spain and although we know of other similar experiences in Theatre and Dance, Circus as an educational activity is still far from the spectrum of interventions that associations of young people at risk of social exclusion know and imagine, despite the fact that it is a highly effective tool to address all the needs that we have listed above. Nor do they fall within the usual educational interventions imagined by the administrations when it comes to supporting projects that tackle social problems, especially in Valencia where these activities have a shorter trajectory than in other autonomous regions. However, both private entities such as savings banks and foundations, as well as European administrations such as Erasmus+, have supported this type of initiative. In this sense, we acknowledge the CONSELLERIA DE BIENESTAR SOCIAL de la Generalitat Valenciana for its openness to innovative proposals in the youth and social field by awarding the young people of FINESTRA INCLUSIVA (our first social circus project) its PREMIO INFANCIA 2014. We have received other awards in 2019, such as the Un País de Cultures Award from the University of Valencia, the AVETID Award for a singular performing arts project (Association of Performing Arts Companies of Valencia), and we have been Finalists in the City of Valencia Social and Urban Innovation Awards 2019. The main objectives of our project are the following: 1. To promote the Personal Development of Collectives at risk of exclusion and People with Intellectual Disabilities. 1.1. developing individual and social skills. 1.2. integrating groups with different profiles. 1.3. by involving them in a European youth exchange in which they can learn about other realities and other young people and groups from other countries and cultures. 2. Making circus training visible as a tool for social work, 2.1. bringing the circus reality closer to the general public with small shows of local performances and National Events with international activities. 2.2. organising meetings and training workshops in circus training centres and entities focused on the Social and Youth fields. 3. Contributing to the development of the European identity 3.1. highlighting the shared European culture and history, but without overshadowing multiculturalism, promoting anti-racism and tolerance, 3.2. fostering environmental care and ecological awareness as a common concern of the whole world, 3.3. by seeking to promote critical thinking and the social impact of relations between countries. 4. Developing the structures of the project partners, 4.1. introducing the International Cooperation of the partners, 4.2. improving the linguistic capacities of the partners' staff. 4.3. improving staff capacities through workshops and exchange of good practices.
