Objectives

Rural and remote areas have the lowest percentages of the EU population in the under-50 age groups, and promoting generational renewal is key to the dynamism, prosperity, and resilience of these areas. Bridging the gap between urban and rural areas in terms of services, infrastructure, and high-quality employment and education opportunities is essential to reversing depopulation trends. This has encouraged young people to stay in their areas or return after studying and working elsewhere, as well as attracting new residents, particularly young talent. RDPs were used to support and encourage young rural entrepreneurs to test new business ideas in land-based (and other) activities before launching them on the market, thereby reducing the associated risks. They have also helped to create meaningful connections, which is particularly useful for new entrants. With this project, we have seen that Europe needs the vision, commitment, and participation of all young people to build a better future that is more ecological, inclusive, and digital. The young participants contributed ideas, inspiration, and energy to imagine, create, and seize opportunities to achieve stronger, more connected, resilient, and prosperous rural areas. In these areas, the creative ideas of young entrepreneurs with a “green” and “sustainable” mindset advocated for the promotion of prosperity, reviving local traditions, or driving pioneering innovations. The different initiatives to boost rural areas that we were able to analyze and present inspired them not only to learn about the biggest obstacles for young people in rural areas when it comes to entrepreneurship, but also to think of new actions within the framework of the new CAP strategic plans. The young people proved to be very sensitive to environmental and climate issues and showed a deep sense of responsibility towards the planet and respect for the young population of the Valsequillo area. Land managers and other agents in rural communities are adopting and developing circular, low-carbon, and sustainable practices. They came to understand how organic farming played an essential role in contributing to sustainable food systems in the rural region of Gran Canaria, as it promotes the production of high-quality food with low environmental impact.
