“Humans think in stories, and we try to make sense of the world by telling stories.” - Yuval Noah Harrari (historian, philosopher, writer) While working with youth workers, we started to notice they are involved in socially engaging and impactful projects, and that those stories are gaining the attention of too few people. At the same time, we acknowledge that stories help our audiences to understand concepts, ideas and causes behind our youth work activities developing a culture of peace and transforming conflicts. Stories are powerful when listeners can place themselves in the shoes of a story's main character. Storytelling can help us to build trust and connection, and at the same time it helps us to cut the noise. A simple story can help people make sense of our complicated, information overloaded reality. And storytelling is an even more critical skill to have at times of great division and violent conflicts like the present. However, it is not easy to tell a powerful story in a simple and powerful way. In the last 6 months (since implementation of our first coWonders training - TOAST - training for trainers in communication) we started to map the reasons for such a situation by interviews, sharing sessions, and know-how exchanges. We spotted that all the interviewed youth workers agreed on the importance of giving visibility to their work, however none of them possessed holistic skills to design impactful or strategic communication. They all had only pieces of competences needed, and as a result they were giving up on thinking holistically. Keeping those challenges in mind, with the Nuraghi project, we would like to create a space (meeting hut) where youth workers could meet to practise telling stories in a format of strategic communication backed up with the professional social marketing and visual tools. Nuraghi is a project on communication, community and weaving stories. The aim of the NURAGHI project is to empower 18 youth workers to be the source of hope and inspiration in developing a culture of peace by equipping them with communication skills and creating a meeting hut to tell powerful stories in order to increase the social impact of their local youth work projects. The objectives of the project are: To develop participants understanding of communication, story telling, strategic communication and visual tools and its role in building connection and impact on local communities; To equip participants with tools to develop a road map for their organisation on telling impactful stories, such as narrative building, presentation skills, storytelling, visual design and building strategic communication plans; To reflect over ideas, values and causes of the participants’ organisations and stories they would like to tell the world through offering design of visual communication tools (logos and moodboards); To practise reaching direct audiences in youth work through strengthening participants’ public speaking skills; To enable participants to tell the powerful stories about their work through guided practice of storytelling techniques and documenting stories; To create a space - meeting hut to practise telling stories and receive feedback from the peers; To create space for participants to design and implement at least 5 activities in their organisations' to use gained communication skills to tell local peaceful stories; To develop a sustainable space serving as a collection of empowering stories and guide for stories creation in the format of Digital Storytelling Platform (DSP); To define, describe and visualise at least 5 stories with powerful peaceful impact which can serve as social proof content on the Digital Storytelling Platform. Our project would develop 4 pillars of communication skills: 1. strategic communication (story and strategy) 2. storytelling (weaving stories) 3. visual tools (story through visuals) 4. public speaking (story to direct audiences). Youth work practice will be developed through the Nuraghi project as participants will get equipped with tools enabling reporting the impact of stories of youth organisations. The created Digital Storytelling Platform will be a space to showcase impactful peaceful youth work projects.
