Objectives

Youth work, survival skills, and game design are three unique yet interrelated areas crucial for nurturing development, resilience, and creativity among young people. Focused on supporting the personal and social development of young individuals, youth work involves various programs and activities. Youth workers engage with young people in settings like schools, community centers, and recreational facilities, offering mentorship, guidance, and growth opportunities. The goal is to empower youth, helping them build confidence, develop skills, and navigate the complexities of adolescence and early adulthood. When combined with survival skills and game design, these essential techniques and knowledge enable individuals to endure and thrive in challenging, often life-threatening situations. Survival skills cover a broad spectrum, from basic needs like finding food, water, and shelter, to advanced strategies such as navigation, first aid, and risk assessment. Teaching these skills to youth not only prepares them for emergencies but also fosters self-reliance and self confidence, problem-solving abilities, and a deeper connection with nature. Creating games is a multidisciplinary endeavor that combines storytelling, visual arts, programming, and psychology. Game design goes beyond entertainment, serving as a powerful tool for education, socialization, skill development and re-connection with our inner child. Engaging young people in game design allows educators and youth workers to teach critical thinking, teamwork, and technological literacy. It also encourages creativity and innovation, helping youth explore new ideas and express themselves uniquely. Integrating youth work, survival skills, and game design creates enriching environments where young people can overcome challenges, harness their creativity, and develop a robust skill set for the future. This multidisciplinary approach ensures youth are not only prepared for real-world scenarios but also equipped to thrive in an increasingly digital and interconnected world. This project stems from a previous project which aimed to introduce adventure education, game design and design thinking which happened in Kuusamo, Finland in December 2023. Youth workers from different Finnish Youth Centres and French youth workers were invited and we decided to set up a new upgraded project together. We decided to add survival skills to the mix as they provided a perfect solid ground to teach resilience and game design in outdoor or digital formats. As both training will happen in natural settings, educating and involving youth in such projects can also foster a deep respect for the environment, a commitment to sustainable living and better mental health. This synergy not only promotes ecological stewardship but also builds resilient communities capable of adapting to and mitigating challenges. Our project will present a range of methods that reflect the diverse practices of game design and survival skills. Our project relates to the idea of sustainable development and the necessity of sustainably using the environment as a resource for youth in rural and urban areas. Our project also relates to the use of gamification and digital skills and tools. We envision design thinking in game design and survival skills as effective tools to involve and build a nexus of union between all the partners involved in this project and transfer to youth workers sustainable environmental competences along with a wide range of social and cognitive practical skills. The primary goal of the project is to enhance the quality of youth work by providing a comprehensive learning experience for youth workers enabling them to upgrade their game design skills and their knowledge in outdoor survival skills and apply this knowledge in their daily work. Objectives: 1. Learn the fundamentals of survival skills, design thinking in game design and empower youth workers with a set of skills with concrete tools promoting adventure educationskills, digital tools and sustainable practices 2. Develop the professional capacities of youth workers in designing and implementing activities promoting outdoor surviving skills and design thinking in game design based on non-formal education methods 3. Exchange practices and experiences on outdoor surviving skills and design thinking in game design among youth workers and young people from different countries. 4. Develop and disseminate a set of outdoor games involving survival skills by using design thinking with youth and youth workers back home
