The goal was for a diverse group of young people from Päijät-Häme and Southwest Finland, who are interested in societal issues, to learn as much as possible about the European Union and how it functions, in the context of Finland’s 30 year EU membership. Key objectives of the project included increasing EU awareness, making EU careers more appealing, and boosting participants’ confidence in engaging with societal matters. These goals were pursued through trips to Brussels and Helsinki, as well as by creating Policy Brief assignments. The project aimed to lower the threshold for participating in public discourse and expressing opinions on current issues. Increasing dialogue between young people and decision-makers was also seen as a vital mission during the planning phase. This was supported by arranging meetings with politicians from various parties, based on participants’ preferences. Other goals not directly related to the content included forming friendships, building regional and cross-regional networks, and showing young people that participating in societal matters is both welcome and encouraged. Some goals, like increasing voter turnout in the EU elections, cannot yet be measured. However, the project also aimed to encourage young people to engage not only through participatory channels but also through formal representative democracy. This specifically refers to voting in EU elections, but also in other elections. In addition to representative democracy, participants were also expected to learn about informal ways to have an impact in society.
