Objectives

The project aims to use Contact Improvisation (CI) to strengthen the personal and professional skills of youth workers, helping them build more inclusive, empathetic, and meaningful relationships with young people. CI, a form of dance based on movement and physical connection, offers a unique way to explore trust, communication, and collaboration—skills that are essential in youth work. By integrating CI, the project provides youth workers with new methods of interaction and learning within the framework of non-formal education. Main objectives: Improve empathy and communication: CI enables youth workers to better understand the emotional and physical boundaries of young people by “listening” through movement. This is particularly useful for young people who have difficulty expressing themselves verbally. Promote social inclusion: CI encourages trust and mutual support, helping to create safe and welcoming spaces for diverse groups where social barriers can be overcome through physical interaction. Develop leadership and teamwork: CI fosters both leadership and the ability to follow, helping facilitators manage group dynamics and encourage collaboration. Encourage emotional awareness and mental well-being: The project uses CI to explore and express emotions, providing young people with tools to better manage stress and emotional challenges. Innovate in non-formal education: By using experiential learning, CI allows themes such as trust and collaboration to be explored in new ways, offering a creative alternative to traditional educational methods. Foster personal growth and self-reflection: CI encourages self-reflection and allows youth workers to identify their strengths as well as areas for improvement, strengthening their professional practice. Create sustainable practices: By training youth workers in CI techniques, the project promotes long-term inclusion and well-being in youth programs. Participants will be able to integrate CI into their organizations to create lasting impact. Impact on youth work practice: The project transforms the way youth workers interact with young people by encouraging active participation, respect, and equality. CI, as a non-verbal and experiential tool, aligns with the goals of non-formal education by encouraging both practice and reflection. It allows young people to develop essential skills such as communication and teamwork in a creative environment. Furthermore, the project addresses mental health issues by offering tools that support emotional expression and help manage stress. The project provides youth workers with innovative, embodied methods that enhance their ability to support and inspire young people. CI promotes empathy, inclusion, emotional well-being, and leadership—elements that are essential for effective youth work. By the end of the project, participants will have practical tools they can apply within their organizations, creating a lasting impact for themselves and for the young people they work with.
