Through the DARE project (Digital Detox And Reconnection to the naturE), we aimed to address a concerning reality: young people and youth professionals are increasingly exposed to chronic stress linked to digital overload, environmental crises, social upheavals, and a progressive loss of connection with nature, with themselves, and with others. These factors have significant impacts on mental health, physical well-being, and the ability to adopt sustainable and resilient lifestyles. This Erasmus+ project, focused on professional development and capacity building for socio-educational youth workers, aimed to reconnect learners with their environment by supporting practices essential to physical and mental well-being, while providing them with the necessary tools to support young people through these changes. DARE (Digital Detox And Reconnection to the naturE) is a project designed for educators, nature facilitators, trainers, association leaders, social workers, and youth leaders. The objective was to provide them with non-formal education methods and pedagogical tools to help establish healthy and balanced lifestyles, essential for their own well-being and that of the young people they work with, in order to address the challenges related to climate change and the evolution of the digital world. In this context, our project was structured around two main components: Digital detox: This included methods to help participants detach from sources of digital stress such as social media, news media, and misinformation, in order to rebalance screen use and promote better mental health. The aim was to encourage and practice a conscious and moderate use of technology to restore a healthier life balance. Reconnection with nature, oneself, and others: This involved activities encouraging a return to ancestral and manual practices, such as hiking, foraging wild edible plants, meditation, healthy cooking, and creative workshops using natural materials. These activities helped strengthen the connection with the earth while also promoting food autonomy and mental well-being. The objectives of the project were aligned with Erasmus+ priorities in youth education to improve the quality of education, promote inclusion, and strengthen resilience and sustainability through international cooperation, as follows: To improve the competences of socio-educational youth workers in implementing practices related to digital detox, reconnection with nature, and the promotion of young people’s mental and physical well-being. To provide pedagogical tools and innovative non-formal education methods enabling professionals to equip young people with the skills needed to face climate change challenges and the evolution of the digital world. To promote healthy and sustainable lifestyles by raising awareness and training participants on the importance of moderating the use of digital technologies, managing media-related stress, and encouraging reconnection with nature. To encourage international cooperation and mutual learning through the exchange of good practices in an inclusive educational environment among participants from different backgrounds and abilities, sharing diverse approaches to digital detox and reconnection with nature. To establish cooperation networks between European organizations working in education and youth, in order to develop and disseminate innovative non-formal education methods focused on young people’s well-being and resilience in the face of future challenges. Our project promoted positive, sustainable, and inclusive behaviours while fostering mutual support and solidarity within diverse European communities. Non-formal education, integrated into the project through its innovative approach, served as a key lever enabling trained educators, youth workers, youth and organization leaders to pass on these values and competences to new generations.
