This project originated from a discussion between Foróige and Sempre a Frente during an Erasmus youth exchange in the summer of 2024. In that conversation, both youth organisations identified a common need to strengthen leadership and mentoring skills among young people in both projects. There was also a shared mutual interest in using creative methods such as Live Action Role Play (LARP) and gamification to develop these competencies. Both the Irish and Polish organisations had previously worked with the Spanish organisation on similar initiatives, and we recognised that their experience and insight would add significant value to the project. As a result, they were invited to join the partnership. To achieve this, we set a number of clear objectives. Firstly, we wanted to empower participants to become self-reflective leaders, individuals who are able to recognise their own strengths and limitations, understand their values, and make thoughtful and responsible decisions. We also aimed to strengthen key life skills such as critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving. Along with relationship building and community development. Another important objective was to create a strong sense of achievement, belonging, and appreciation of diversity. We worked to create a safe and supportive environment in which participants felt encouraged to share their perspectives and learn from one another. By bringing together young people from different cultural backgrounds, we promoted mutual understanding and respect, helping to break down stereotypes and build lasting connections across borders. To meet these objectives we used both non formal and informal youth work methodologies that were designed to be creative and interactive and to encourage the participants to be co-creators of their experiences while on the exchange. Examples of the methodologies used to meet our objectives were: Live Action Role-Play (LARP): Participants took part in immersive role-play scenarios that required them to exercise leadership, negotiate solutions, improvise and make decisions together in real time. Gamification: All activities incorporate game-based elements to use fun as a reinforcement for learning and developing. We used methods such as challenges, which made the experience engaging and motivated participants to push and challenge themselves. Performance: Public speaking and drama-based exercises were used to help participants build confidence, improve communication, and develop their ability to present ideas to others. We noticed a massive increase in participant’s confidence from the start to the end of the week through performance. Mythology: Participants explored themes of heroism, community, and personal growth through stories and legends, allowing them to reflect on their own potential and the impact they can have within their communities. Participants also shared stories of myths and legends from their own countries with the wider group which created a sense of belonging.
