We wanted to be able to give our respective groups of young people an international experience to support their personal development through a programme of life skills and youth leadership training. We wanted to promote intercultural dialogue and break down prejudices and stereotypes. We wanted to use this project as a best practice example of active participation of young people to promote future exchanges and to start a process which will continue to support disadvantaged young people from different backgrounds, cultures and nationalities. We wanted to achieve this using all the expertise and tools at our disposal to create an inclusive and diverse environment to learn and to grow in confidence. We wanted young people to be able to return home after the exchange with a desire and an ability to tell their story, to communicate better and give themselves greater life chances in employment and the community. We wanted their emerging leadership skills to be enhanced so that they can position themselves within their organisations and communities as active members and willing and able to use their youth voice to influence change. We wanted to use restorative practice methods to encourage the young people to engage positively with each other and bring these skills into their personal, school and family lives. Objectives of the project included: • Support for personal development of disadvantaged young people through life skills training including restorative practice methodology. • Support for building teams and networks throughout the phases of the project including online contact between participants prior to the actual exchange. • Promoting active participation of young people in considering best learning methods for themselves. • Encouraging potential participants to identify their own needs and get buy in to possible learning outcomes. • Involving young people in all the lead up to the exchange looking at language, culture, and task related preparation. • Supporting young people to develop leadership skills that can be practically focused on dealing with real life challenges within their organisations and communities • Selection of an agreed theme focusing on the European Youth Goals to choose the main subject areas.
