The project Roots4Future: Young People for a Sustainable Future was implemented with the aim of providing young participants with a non-formal learning experience capable of strengthening personal, social and civic competences, while at the same time promoting environmental sustainability and the valorisation of intangible cultural heritage. Through international mobility, a concrete opportunity was created to support participants’ individual growth, intercultural dialogue and the development of active European citizenship, in line with the objectives of the Erasmus+ Youth Programme and several Youth Goals, particularly those related to a greener, more inclusive and participatory Europe. One of the main objectives was the strengthening of transversal competences among the young people involved. During the activities, skills such as collaboration, leadership, intercultural communication and problem-solving were developed through participatory methodologies based on teamwork and experiential learning. Space was also given to personal reflection and self-assessment, allowing participants to gain greater awareness of the competences acquired and of their own personal development path. Another central objective concerned raising awareness on environmental sustainability issues. Educational and practical activities encouraged young people to adopt more responsible behaviours towards the environment and to understand the impact of their actions in everyday life. Creative workshops based on the reuse of materials and field activities, such as environmental volunteering initiatives and concrete actions aimed at caring for local areas, made it possible to translate knowledge into practical experience, strengthening both individual and collective responsibility towards the environment. At the same time, the project promoted the valorisation of intangible cultural heritage, encouraging participants to reflect on local traditions, cultural identities and their role in building social cohesion. Through creative activities and intercultural exchange moments, the connection between young people and their communities was strengthened, highlighting how culture can represent a tool for inclusion, intergenerational dialogue and sustainable social development. The project also pursued the objective of fostering social inclusion and active participation by involving young people with fewer opportunities, coming from disadvantaged economic, geographical or social backgrounds. They were offered the possibility to experience a meaningful international mobility, contributing to increased self-confidence, broader personal horizons and a stronger sense of belonging to the community. Activities were designed in an accessible and inclusive way, ensuring active participation of everyone and valuing diversity as a resource for collective learning. Another important objective concerned the promotion of European citizenship and intercultural cooperation. Through the interaction between young people from different countries, the sense of belonging to Europe was strengthened and common values such as respect, tolerance, solidarity and democratic participation were promoted. Participants were encouraged to become promoters of positive change within their communities, also through future initiatives in volunteering and cooperation. Overall, the project aimed to transform the mobility experience into a pathway of personal and collective growth, capable of generating impact not only on participants but also on the organisations involved and on local contexts. The objectives pursued contributed to strengthening competences, environmental awareness, social inclusion and active citizenship, providing young people with concrete tools to participate responsibly in society and in the European context.
