The project Active for Nature - United in Diversity was designed to achieve several key objectives through a combination of out door sports, environmental education, and intercultural exchange. From a youth work perspective, the primary aims were: 1. Addressing Environmental Sustainability and Climate Change. This project was tailored for young participants eager to explore critical global challenges like environmental sustainability and climate change. Over the course of a ten-day experience in the woodlands around Cascina Rapello in Northern Italy, teenagers from four European countries — Italy, Hungary, Romania and Spain — participated in activities designed to deepen their understanding of these vital topics. The project combined outdoor sports and physical activities, encouraging active engagement with the environment, promoting a hands-on approach to ecological stewardship. 2. Deep Connection with Nature. Participants developed a meaningful connection with nature, having explored how their physical, mental, and emotional well-bein g intertwine with the health of the environment. Through activities such as hiking, orienteering, and eco-friendly sports, they experienced first-hand the importance of caring for nature, building awareness and motivation to act as stewards of the planet. 3. Integration of Outdoor Sports and Environmental Education The project uniquely integrated outdoor sports with ecological learning, allowing participants to physically engage with nature while expanding their knowledge on biodiversity, environmental sustainability, and climate change. This approach fostered both physical development and an appreciation for the interconnectedness of humans and the natural world, promoting personal growth and environmental consciousness. 4. International Exchange and Cultural Diversity. As a youth exchange program, Active for Nature, United in Diversity brought together young people from diverse cultural backgrounds. The participants explored not only their environmental surroundings, but also their personal and cultural identities through intercultural dialogue and collaboration. By sharing their unique traditions, perspectives, and values, they fostered mutual respect, enhance their cultural awareness, and develop a broader sense of European citizenship. 5. Building Peer Relationships and Group Cohesion. The project provided a unique setting for peer-to-peer and leader-to-peer interactions, where participants worked together to overcome challenges and build trust. Activities such as team sports, group problem-solving and shared responsibilities (e.g., cooking and maintaining their campsite) fostered a strong sense of community and encouraged cooperation, leadership and empathy within the group. 6. Personal and Professional Development. Participants acquired valuable skills that can benefit them both personally and professionally: they learned how to manage group dynamics, solve problems and take responsibility for themselves and others in a communal setting. These experiences enhanced their resilience, self-reliance and leadership skills, making them more likely to pursue further opportunities in European mobility programs while overcoming cultural stereotypes. Active for Nature – United in Diversity was a dynamic project aimed at addressing environmental challenges, fostering intercultural exchange, and promoting personal development through outdoor sports and environmental education. By combining physical activity with meaningful learning experiences, participants grew not only as individuals but also as responsible citizens ready to contribute to a more sustainable and inclusive Europe.
