Objectives

The Reconnecting project was developed to address the growing disconnection between young people and nature at both individual and social levels. Many young people spend most of their time indoors, in urban environments and using digital devices, with limited opportunities to engage in meaningful outdoor experiences. This distance concerns not only the time spent in nature, but also the ability to recognise themselves as part of an ecosystem, understand the impact of their actions and adopt sustainable practices in everyday life. The project created an international educational space where participants could slow down, observe their lifestyles and reflect on the personal and collective meaning of connection with nature. Through non-formal education, experiential learning and outdoor activities, Reconnecting linked environmental sustainability, personal well-being, social relationships and community participation. Sustainability was therefore presented not only as a set of environmentally friendly behaviours, but as a broader perspective concerning the relationship with oneself, other people and the surrounding territory. One of the main objectives was to strengthen participants’ awareness of their relationship with the natural environment. The project aimed to help them recognise the obstacles limiting the time they spend outdoors and the consequences of this disconnection on physical, mental and emotional well-being. Through observation, personal reflection, mindfulness, walking and group discussions, participants were encouraged to rediscover nature as a place for learning, well-being and responsibility. A second objective was to develop green competences and a broader understanding of sustainability. The project addressed responsible consumption, waste reduction, reuse, sustainable food choices, biodiversity and responsible behaviour in natural environments. Participants were also encouraged to reflect on the connection between environmental and social sustainability and on how individual choices are influenced by economic conditions, geographical context and cultural habits. The project also aimed to improve mental and emotional well-being through contact with nature and the creation of a safe community environment. Particular attention was given to the relationship with digital technologies. Participants were invited to observe their use of mobile phones and social media, promoting reflection on digital balance and on a more conscious use of technology. Through international group work, participatory workshops, outdoor activities and reflection groups, the project aimed to strengthen intercultural communication, active listening, cooperation, critical thinking, problem solving, public speaking, autonomy and responsibility. Participants were involved in preparing and implementing activities, providing daily feedback and planning dissemination actions. Reconnecting also contributed to the creation of an international community based on respect, inclusion, and cooperation, which continued to develop even after the mobility had ended. Thanks to the follow-up activities and the continued contact between participants and partner organisations, some of the people involved later took part in the design and implementation of “Earthbound”, a youth exchange taking place in 2026 and focused on similar themes. The project therefore strengthened participants’ sense of European belonging and their awareness of the value of international cooperation, showing in concrete terms that challenges such as climate change, the consumption of natural resources, and young people’s well-being cannot be addressed exclusively at national level, but require dialogue, shared responsibility, and cooperation across borders. The objectives were consistent with the three main topics identified in the application: green skills, physical and mental health and well-being, and community development. The project also contributed to the Erasmus+ priorities concerning inclusion, environmental sustainability, active participation and the European dimension. Overall, Reconnecting aimed to ensure that participants completed the mobility with greater awareness of their relationship with nature, practical tools to improve their well-being, more sustainable behaviours, new personal and social competences and stronger motivation to act within their communities.
