Objectives

As an informal group of five young people living in Torino, Italy we chose to encompass the complex and very actual topic of sustainable and ethical consumption of resources after meeting to the specific purpose of writing a youth exchange together. After sharing perspectives on which particular topic would be of common interest to us and able to serve as a common denominator of interest to our group, we finally decided to focus our work on conscious and sustainable consumption of resources. As a first step, we focused our brain-storming on environmental topics and issues, among the most relevant priorities to the Erasmus+ Programme. We thought that focusing on issues related to sustainability and the fight against climate change would’ve been a true opportunity to our group, since three of us are environmental engineering students, or graduated in environmental engineering, and expressed their will to put their knowledge and expertise on the subject at the project’s service. Moreover, our informal group was born thanks to common participation to the youth activities fostered by Eufemia, an association based in Turin that works in the field of Erasmus+ and ESC projects. As activists and volunteers of Eufemia, we were able to experiment and acknowledge the importance of ethically consuming, re-using, re-cycling and saving food, textiles and other utilities (such as water, electricity and other energy sources) to carry out a more sustainable way of living and reduce our impact on the planet and the environment. In fact, the topic of ethical and sustainable consumption of food as a way to enhance social inclusion is a very important one in the context of the association. So, after meeting and gathering our past experiences in the field of EU youth mobility and active participation, and exchanging personal views, interests, competences and wishes for the project, we decided the topic of our choice to be the sustainable and ethical consumption of resources. The choice of our topic doesn’t come exclusively from our personal sensibilities. The issue of waste of food and other primary sources and utilities is a very serious one at the European level, and even more so on a global scale. According to the EC official data, around 88 tons of food are wasted by EU countries every year, both by households and industries (see Brief on food waste in the European Union). Waste of water is still another sensitive issue, being the European agricultural sector one of the main actors responsible for this phenomenon, with high levels of inefficiency regarding consumption of water (it is estimated that around 20% of water is wasted after being collected due to inefficiencies in the water supply network). Yet another big problem is represented by the inadequate management of energy sources (mainly due to inefficiency in its utilization, but also to lack of awareness on sustainable energy sources), which greatly contributes to the increase of the carbon footprint of EU countries. In fact, the EU is one of the biggest energy consumers in the world (according to the EEA, many EU countries are still lagging behind in reaching the 2030 climate and energy targets set out by the European Commission), mainly in the transport, construction and industrial sectors; and although the public opinion debate is increasingly pointing out the necessity to convert to renewable and cleaner energy sources, major improvements still need to be put into place. In light of these serious data on the situation of consumption and management of resources at a European level, we believe that dedicating our project to the topic of ethical consumption of resources would be a good way to raise awareness on the subject among young people, and find ways to tackle the issue and share and spread best practices together. The necessities we identified are those of: Raise awareness on the topic of sustainable and ethical consumption of resources among the participants; Spread and share best practices by creating a space for discussion and confrontation Give participants the chance not just to discuss on a theoretical level, but also to concretely get to know and see virtuous examples of circular economy and ethical consumption of resources in the metropolitan area around Torino (where the project was held).
