Our project From Needle to Thread arose from the urgent need to address environmental challenges caused by the textile and fashion industry, while at the same time encouraging young people to practise waste management and to become more responsible consumers. To achieve this, we set three main objectives directly linked to our priorities: environmental preservation, the development of green skills, and the transition to sustainable energy sources. The main mission of the project was to support the shift towards more sustainable production and consumption, in order to respond to the growing ecological concerns within the field of fashion and textiles among young people across Italy, Poland, Türkiye, Georgia, Latvia and Romania. In response to the needs of the moment, the project was built around two fundamental elements: reconsidering the concept of fashion and changing consumption habits for the future. In countries such as Italy, Poland and Latvia, fashion changed rapidly, and young people were identified as key consumers in this industry. However, fast fashion proved to be a major contributor to pollution, excessive water use, and textile waste. Italy, as one of the main fashion hubs in Europe, faced serious challenges related to the environmental impact of the sector, particularly among disadvantaged groups. In Romania, many young people had little exposure to sustainable lifestyles, and lacked knowledge and skills in textile recycling and eco-fashion. In Georgia, limited understanding of sustainable fashion practices and few training opportunities in this sector were among the main obstacles. Similarly, in Türkiye, vintage clothing was not common, and most young people were not fully aware of sustainable textile practices. In Poland and Latvia, low awareness and limited education on sustainable fashion among youth remained a major issue, particularly regarding the consequences of consumption habits. Raising awareness among these young people helped them understand the importance of reducing their ecological footprint. The motivation behind our initiative was inspired by the French government’s campaign promoting the repair of clothes and shoes instead of discarding them — a practice that successfully reduced waste caused by fast fashion. As Walt Disney once said, “All our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them.” France’s approach inspired our dream to challenge the culture of disposable products and to encourage a long-lasting, sustainable mindset. Throughout the project, we aimed to spread sustainable thinking, informing young people about waste management, zero-waste fashion, and textile recycling. Equipped with this knowledge and motivation, the participants emerged as young leaders in sustainability, ready to build a greener future. From Needle to Thread became much more than a training program — it represented a shared commitment to positive change and prepared young people to face environmental challenges related to waste and the fashion industry. Especially in today’s world, where the ecological balance is under threat, this initiative proved to be a necessity rather than a choice. As global policies moved toward a greener Europe, our project supported young people in learning the art and science of eco-design, empowering them to meet new environmental expectations. It was not only about future employment, but also a step toward a healthier planet. The participants learned to raise awareness about the environmental impact of fast fashion, while developing practical skills such as repairing, recycling, and upcycling clothes to reduce textile waste. Inspired by the Refashion accreditation, our project highlighted creative and innovative solutions for a sustainable future. Our ultimate goal was to shape the next generations into environmental stewards and pioneers of green innovation. Defending this vision became a guarantee for the future, offering young people the opportunity to live in a world where sustainability was no longer a choice, but a lifestyle. In conclusion, From Needle to Thread contributed to building a sustainable, eco-conscious future, raising awareness about eco-friendly practices in daily life and promoting a cleaner, waste-free environment. Guided by the Refashion approach, we successfully inspired young people to adopt sustainable habits and to integrate them into their personal, academic, and professional growth, becoming more responsible and globally aware citizens.
