This project is a follow-up of our E+ KA2 Capacity Building in the field of Youth project named W_UP Tour (608565-EPP-1-2019-1-IT-EPPKA2-CBY-ACPALA) and aims to pursue the same objectives, tailored to the needs of our local context and co-designed with Italian and Spanish participants who took part in W_UP activities and remained active in the associations. The project idea was born by reflecting on the fact that the way we produce and consume nowadays is unsustainable and leads to very negative impacts on the Earth and its living beings. We believe that a radical transformation in our production and consumption habits are urged in order to reverse this trend and take care of the planet and our lives. Considering the success of the W_UP Tour project, the impact it had on participants and the technical experience of our partner from Spain, we believe that upcycling represents a possible artistic and original solution towards green transition and sustainability. Upcycling means turning discarded objects into something new and more valuable. It is an improved and creative form of recycling that gives a second life to trash and unused items, providing them with a renewed purpose and a much better quality. Consequently, the new product has more value than its original components, besides having a longer lifespan. These goods are re-introduced into consumer cycles and often into the market, feeding the circular economy process. Therefore, the upcycling technique contributes to the reduction of CO2 emissions: on one hand, the materials’ lifetime is extended, avoiding sending a huge waste volume to landfill. On the other hand, it leads to less energy and resources consumption in producing new goods or recycling old ones. Thus, upcycling plays an undoubtable ecological role. Besides being eco-friendly, upcycling is also social-friendly. It supports local economies and businesses, since it has potential in fostering local communities to better manage their waste, to implement new forms of social entrepreneurship and to sell the resulting items in order to financially support themselves. In conclusion, against the throwaway culture, upcycling encourages sustainable practices as it raises social and environmental awareness, promotes ethical and conscious consumption, reduces ecological and carbon footprint and supports local communities. Therefore, this project will focus on upcycling, i.e. the art of creative recycling, in order to train participants on turning discarded materials into new products, to raise awareness of environmental sustainability and proper waste management, to promote a spirit of social entrepreneurship based on recycling and reuse, and to actively involve the local community. The general aim of the project is to encourage creative solutions, the development of practical and manual skills, environmental sustainability and social entrepreneurship by revitalising the spaces of an old farmhouse through upcycling techniques. Participants will be trained in hands-on workshops and will learn the methodologies and techniques of creative reuse of materials, giving new life to waste and transforming it into something new and more valuable. They will create objects and furniture that are actually useful and aesthetically pleasing with which to embellish and improve the venue. Through this project, we aim to create a learning space where participants can acquire, develop and share their competences and practical skills, through the renovation of old furniture. Hence, the specific objectives of the project are: - Provide participants with practical skills and abilities to repurpose materials which are no longer used; - Create useful and sustainable finished products out of old furniture and discarded materials, by renovating the old farmhouse; - Develop creativity and innovative strategies to reduce waste and promote the circular economy; - Implement new forms of social entrepreneurship based on upcycling; - Raise awareness of environmental sustainability among participants and the local community; - Enhance the rural area by creating connections between organisations, international participants and local inhabitants; - Offer an intercultural learning environment and the opportunity to discover more about other European countries, cultures and realities; - Promote the Erasmus+ programme and other European projects.
