Objectives

"To Libraries and Beyond" addresses the need to highlight the evolving role of libraries in society. They are essential for socio-economic, cultural and political progress, offering more than just books—they promote education, social inclusion and digital literacy. The project, inspired by discussions during a youth exchange in Romania in 2024, underscores the role libraries play in community building and as safe, accessible spaces. With around 65,000 public libraries across Europe visited by 100 million people annually, libraries are critical hubs for education, culture and democracy. However, they face challenges like budget cuts and increased demand for digital services. Libraries offer resources that might otherwise be inaccessible, fostering community engagement and social inclusion. They also support the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by advancing literacy and providing free access to information and technology. The project name, “To Libraries and Beyond,” inspired by Buzz Lightyear’s phrase from Toy Story, reflects the vast potential of modern libraries. Libraries today provide more than traditional resources; they offer digital tools, museum passes and other learning opportunities. This project aims to challenge outdated perceptions of libraries, promoting them as dynamic centers of lifelong learning, digital skill development and community connection. It seeks political and public recognition of libraries as key players in culture, education and social integration. By focusing on diversity, inclusion and European values, the project encourages participants to embrace the potential of libraries to drive social growth and personal development. Through creative writing, video making and the "living library" activities, participants will break down stereotypes and foster connections. The initiative aligns with the European Youth Strategy, supporting well-being, civic participation and intercultural understanding. The project seeks to address misconceptions about libraries and promote investment in their future development for the benefit of present and future generations. “To Libraries and Beyond” is a call to reimagine libraries as dynamic, inclusive spaces that empower individuals and communities, helping them adapt to the digital age while fostering education, social inclusion, European citizenship and cultural heritage preservation. The objectives: -encourage 34 young people and youth leaders from 6 European countries to research and get involved in their local libraries, developing their active citizenship, community building and active role as change makers, by accessing and promoting the safe space and facilities provided by their local authorities and institutions, upon preparatory tasks, a 9 days youth exchange and dissemination activities, including active involvement in organising a thematic public event -improve literacy competence among young people, by emphasizing the interactive access to information through non formal methods, boosting self-expression and mutual understanding, while learning new digital tools and storytelling based on creative writing, video-making, performing arts or living library, with the purpose of reducing social media scrolling in favour of educational and self-development practices -explore the benefits and facilities that local libraries around European Union have, together with the impact on young people in terms of inclusivity, free access to education tools and training, community building, sense of belonging and inclusion, by breaking the myth of libraries as static places of study, interactive-less or monotony
