The MAPS (Mixed Ability Participatory Strategies) project was developed with the aim of strengthening the competences of youth workers in promoting meaningful, inclusive, and accessible participation opportunities for all young people, with particular attention to those facing fewer opportunities. The project was born from the awareness that young people do not constitute a homogeneous group and that many of them face social, economic, cultural, geographical, or personal barriers that limit their participation in social, educational, and democratic life. In this context, youth workers need specific tools, methodologies, and competences to work effectively with diverse groups and to support pathways of inclusion and active citizenship. The overall objective of the project was to provide youth workers with non-formal education methods and practices that foster access, engagement, empowerment, and inclusion of young people with fewer opportunities in social, educational, and employment contexts. Through an international Training Course involving 30 youth workers from 9 European organizations, the project pursued the following specific objectives: • Strengthen competences in designing and facilitating inclusive participatory processes that value diversity; • Develop the ability to work within multidisciplinary teams through a systemic and interdisciplinary approach; • Improve skills in dialogue, mediation, and relationship-building among young people, communities, and institutions; • Support the development of life skills, self-awareness, and vocational identity among young people with fewer opportunities; • Promote active citizenship, democratic participation, and youth empowerment; • Foster the exchange of practices and European cooperation among organizations active in the youth work sector. An additional objective of the project was the co-creation of the MAPS Participatory Strategies Guide, a collection of strategies, tools, and practical approaches inspired by the principles of Meaningful Youth Participation. The guide was designed to support youth workers in their work with mixed-ability groups and to improve the quality and accessibility of participatory processes. The project contributed to the Erasmus+ priorities related to inclusion and diversity, participation in democratic life, and the promotion of active citizenship, while also strengthening the quality and innovation of youth work at local, national, and European levels.
