Objectives

The B²TL Project aims to empower youth workers, especially those from rural or geographically disadvantaged areas, by providing them with the knowledge and skills to advocate for sustainable tourism and ecological awareness. The tourism sector, despite its potential for economic growth, has also led to negative impacts such as environmental degradation, cultural disruption, and social inequality. These issues are particularly evident in rural areas, where tourism is both an opportunity and a challenge. The B²TL project contributes to the EU's broader goals of climate action and environmental sustainability, objectives that are explicitly articulated in key policy documents such as the EU Youth Strategy, the Erasmus+ 2024 Annual Work Programme & the EU Green Deal. Transforming sectors like tourism, which have significant environmental impacts, is a crucial part of this strategy. The project focuses on fostering ecological awareness and promoting sustainable tourism practices within local communities. Youth workers will be empowered to drive social projects and campaigns that encourage grassroots activism and environmentally responsible behaviour. This will have a positive impact on environmental conservation and promote respect for local cultures and traditions. Active participation by citizens is essential to ensuring that tourism development and urbanisation proceed in ways that preserve natural resources, cultural heritage and social cohesion between tourists and locals. This aligns with the EU Youth Strategy, which encourages young people to take an active role in tackling climate change and promoting sustainability through local initiatives, including responsible tourism. From the perspective of youth work practice, the specific objectives of the project are: To strengthen the role of youth workers in promoting ecological and economic sustainability within rural and disadvantaged communities. To provide youth workers with new skills in the Reciprocal Maieutic Approach (RMA) and other methodologies that foster critical thinking, active participation, and social engagement. To empower youth workers to create and lead social projects and sustainable practices and campaigns aimed at fostering sustainable tourism and environmental awareness, particularly in areas affected by overtourism, gentrification, and economic challenges. To enhance youth workers' digital skills for promoting responsible tourism through online platforms and social media, enabling them to engage geographically disadvantaged youth. To strengthen international cooperation among youth organisations across Europe, fostering the exchange of best practices and creating networks that promote sustainable tourism and local development. The B²TL project is a significant initiative that aligns with the priorities of youth workers’ mobility under Erasmus+, promoting non-formal and informal learning opportunities. By improving the professional skills of youth workers, particularly in the areas of sustainability, social planning, and environmental activism, the project seeks to make a tangible impact at the local, national, and European levels. These improvements will lead to a better capacity to involve and empower young people, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds, ensuring their active participation in shaping sustainable futures for their communities.
