Quality and innovation of youth work

Objectives

We want to create this project to help youth workers adapt to the fast-changing world, especially in terms of creativity, problem-solving, and tech skills. As the world progresses, young people are expected to have a mix of both creative and technical abilities. However, many youth workers do not have the tools or methods to teach these essential skills to young people. This training course aims to bridge that gap by offering practical STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) methodologies that youth workers can use to foster creativity and innovation in their work. One of the significant issues we aim to address is the gap between the skills young people need to succeed and the opportunities youth workers have to help them develop these skills. While there is a growing emphasis on technical skills such as coding and robotics, these are often taught separately from creative thinking. Studies show that integrating the arts into STEM education leads to improved problem-solving and innovation. For example, research highlights the importance of combining the arts with technical subjects to foster better problem-solving abilities in young people (https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/21582440211032164). This project will equip youth workers with the tools to blend technical and creative areas, helping young people learn to both utilize tools and think creatively to address real-world problems. In many countries, youth workers face challenges in incorporating interdisciplinary approaches due to a lack of resources and training. Research underscores the value of STEAM education in merging technical and creative skills, but access to such programs is often limited. A study points out that interdisciplinary learning, such as STEAM, significantly enhances creativity and problem-solving, but barriers like insufficient resources make it hard to implement in many regions (https://commission.europa.eu/documents_en?prefLang=lt). This project will offer youth workers hands-on experience in STEAM activities, allowing them to confidently implement these approaches in their work. Youth today require a broad range of skills to thrive, and STEAM education is one of the best approaches for developing those abilities. Research shows that STEAM education not only enhances technical skills but also encourages creativity and problem-solving. According to recent studies, STEAM education helps students develop a well-rounded skill set, which is critical in today’s fast-evolving world (https://unesdoc.unesco.org/ark:/48223/pf0000372577). However, many young people, particularly in rural or underserved areas, lack access to programs that blend these skills. This project will provide youth workers with the necessary training to integrate STEAM into their practices, ensuring that young people are prepared with the skills they need for future success. Recently, the importance of STEAM education in preparing youth for the future has gained more recognition. The European Commission’s Digital Education Action Plan (2021-2027) stresses the need for young people to develop both technical and creative skills to meet the demands of modern economies (https://commission.europa.eu/documents_en?prefLang=lt). By incorporating STEAM, this project will empower youth workers to foster both technical knowledge and creativity, giving young people the tools they need to become successful problem-solvers and innovators in today’s world. With our partners from Turkey, Romania, Spain, Bulgaria, Hungary, Cyprus, Greece, and Italy, we believe that using STEAM education in youth work can greatly improve creativity, problem-solving, and innovation in young people across Europe. This method is important globally, and we want to give youth workers the skills and tools to help young people think critically and solve real-life problems by combining technical and creative approaches. Aim: The aim of this project is to give youth workers STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) tools to inspire creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving in young people. By combining technical and artistic approaches, youth workers will help young people develop innovative solutions and a balanced mix of creative and technical skills. Objectives: 1. Teach youth workers STEAM methods to boost creativity and innovation in young people. 2. Combine technical skills like coding with creative thinking for better problem-solving. 3. Encourage mixing art and technology in youth work. 4. Improve youth workers' ability to involve young people in solving real-world problems using STEAM.
