We wanted to increase political and social awareness among students of Riga 22nd Secondary School by creating meaningful opportunities for them to engage with current public issues, democratic processes, and decision-makers. The project was designed to respond to the need for stronger youth participation, as many young people show limited interest in politics and insufficient understanding of how decisions are made at local, national, and European levels. Our overall aim was to help students become more informed, confident, and active members of society. The main objectives of the project were to promote civic participation, develop critical thinking and media literacy skills, and strengthen understanding of European Union values such as democracy, inclusion, human rights, and rule of law. We also aimed to build practical competences in communication, teamwork, leadership, debating, and responsible participation in public life. Through direct contact with politicians, journalists, and other professionals, students were encouraged to see that their opinions matter and that they can contribute constructively to their communities. Another important objective was to create a sustainable culture of youth engagement within the school. By organising interactive activities such as discussions with decision-makers, visits to institutions, debates, simulations, and journalism workshops, we wanted to establish long-term traditions that continue beyond the project itself. In this way, the project aimed not only to benefit individual participants, but also to strengthen the school’s capacity to educate socially responsible, politically aware, and proactive young people.
