What we aimed to achieve with Embracing Every Voice was to address one of the most pressing challenges facing young people today: the feeling of being excluded or unheard, particularly in rural and isolated areas of Europe. The project was born from the idea that youth are not just beneficiaries of opportunities but essential stakeholders in building a better, fairer future. Our goal was to empower 25 young people from the Netherlands, Spain, Romania, and Curaçao to engage in decision-making actively, contribute to their communities, and see themselves as agents of inclusion and participation. The project placed inclusion at its very core. We wanted every participant, regardless of background or opportunity level, to feel they truly belonged. For that reason, more than half of the group came from disadvantaged contexts, including island territories, rural areas, low-income families, and youth facing health challenges. By working and living together for nine days, they experienced firsthand what inclusion looks like in practice: respect, empathy, and mutual support. Our objectives were both practical and ambitious. We wanted to raise awareness about inclusivity in education, employment, culture, and community life, while also giving participants concrete skills — communication, teamwork, leadership, and project planning — to put these ideas into action. Through non-formal learning methods like workshops, role plays, and simulations, participants didn’t just learn about inclusion; they practiced it. They even created community initiatives during the exchange, such as outdoor events in Zutphen, showing how small steps in small communities can have a big impact. Another important objective was to strengthen a sense of European citizenship. With partners from both mainland Europe and the outermost regions (Curaçao and the Canary Islands), we highlighted that Europe’s strength lies in its diversity and connections across distances. Participants learned to embrace different perspectives, collaborate across cultures, and recognize themselves as part of a wider European and global community. Finally, Embracing Every Voice was about inspiring active citizenship. Daily reflection sessions and the final community outreach event in Zutphen encouraged participants to think about how they could take what they learned back home. Many left with clear action plans and the confidence to speak up, organize, and engage in their schools, neighborhoods, and youth groups. The youth exchange unfolded as a journey of connection and growth. Day 1 was dedicated to arrival, settling in, and ice-breaker games that created a safe atmosphere and built the trust needed for the week ahead. On Day 2, team-building tasks and discussions of expectations gave participants ownership of their learning, while an introduction to Erasmus+ placed their experience in a broader European context. Day 3 focused on intercultural cooperation, with mixed-group tasks and cultural presentations that sparked curiosity and highlighted both differences and commonalities. On Day 4, the “Street Challenge” sent participants into Zutphen to interact with the local community, strengthening creativity, teamwork, and social engagement, followed by reflections connecting experiences to learning goals. Day 5 was devoted to awareness of inequality through the “Privilege Walk,” a powerful method that deepened empathy and opened space for meaningful group discussions. On Day 6, participants joined creative workshops to practice communication, self-expression, and problem-solving. That evening, the Spanish team from Tenerife hosted an intercultural night, sharing their traditions and inspiring connections between culture and society. Day 7 deepened the theme of civic participation, highlighted by Curaçao’s theatrical presentation on its island’s history. The recognition of parallels between Curaçao and Tenerife’s stories created a moving sense of shared experience and solidarity. Mixed groups then explored ideas for active social engagement. Finally, Day 8 centred on evaluation, where participants made their learning visible, celebrated achievements, and shared emotional farewells. Throughout the week, young people developed intercultural understanding, improved communication and teamwork, built confidence, reflected on privilege and inclusion, and discovered how to raise their voices within their communities. The intercultural evenings, in particular, embodied the project’s core message: every voice matters.
