Objectives

With the Urban OUTdoors Expedition project, our main goal was to empower youth workers with practical skills, tools, and ideas to create and lead inclusive outdoor activities in urban environments. We strongly believe that outdoor learning doesn’t only belong in remote forests or the mountains; it can and should be brought into cities, where many youth organizations work every day. We saw a need: many youth workers want to use outdoor education methods but feel limited by the lack of access to nature or outdoor training. That’s where our project came in. We wanted to show that you can design meaningful, powerful, and transformative outdoor learning experiences even in parks, streets, or community spaces in a city. More specifically, our objectives were: • To equip youth workers with new skills and knowledge - we focused on building their capacity to lead outdoor education activities that promote inclusion, sustainability, and intercultural learning, using tools that are accessible and adaptable to their local context. • To develop innovative methods for working outdoors in cities - we wanted to explore how urban spaces can be used creatively for personal development, teamwork, and community-building activities. • To include people with fewer opportunities - a key part of the project was making sure that the activities and methods we developed were inclusive. We aimed to make outdoor education more accessible to young people from marginalized backgrounds, whether due to financial, social, or geographic barriers. • To promote sustainability and connection to the environment - even in cities, people can (and should) connect with nature. We used this project to encourage participants to adopt more environmentally-friendly habits and to pass that awareness on to the young people they work with. • To strengthen partnerships and foster future collaboration - we also aimed to deepen cooperation between our partner organizations across Europe by sharing practices, co-creating resources, and supporting each other’s growth in youth work.
