“Nature Needs Us” is a project developed in collaboration with our partners and students from 4 schools from Romania, North Macedonia, Hungary and Czech Republic, as a solution to provide teenagers of 13-17 years old a context to learn about environmental protection and eco-friendly practices through non-formal activities, as their educational institutions do not provide such subjects for them. It is important, especially for teenagers, to learn about sustainable and eco-friendly practices and the need of protecting the environment, particularly in this period of time, when we see more accentuated climate changes around us. Learning such practices from a young age can shape an individual more ancorated into the environmental reality of the moment, understanding the importance of taking action and being environmental-responsible, empowering the ones around them in doing so as well. The partners for this project were chosen based on the need of the teenagers from their communities to increase their environmental awareness and sustainable practices understanding, to be able to become more eco-friendly in their daily lives. With the help of teachers from the schools with which the partner NGOs collaborate, the needs of the teenagers, on this topic, were assessed. A summary of the needs found are: Awareness and education - they need to learn about the environmental issues present nowadays such as climate change, pollution, biodiversity loss; Engagement in sustainable practices - they wish to find out more about eco-friendly habits like recycling, reducing waste, conserving energy and water that they can adopt in their daily practices; Connection to Nature - they wish to spend more time outside, doing outdoor activities and they recognise their tendency on spending the whole day indoors, surfing on the Internet, wanting to improve and minimise this issue. The fact that they rarely have the opportunity of gaining an environmental-education from a learning context is proven by the statistics on this theme as well. For instance, comparing the environmental performance index from around the world, we observe that the mentioned countries are positioned mediocre compared to other countries especially from Europe: Czech Republic - rank 17, Hungary - rank 30, Romania - rank 35, North Macedonia - rank 60 (https://epi.yale.edu/downloads/2024-epi-report.pdf). Therefore, through this project we aim on offering the base of an environmental-education for the participating teenagers from the partner NGOs. This project contributes to creating more eco-friendly communities, being linked with the following priorities and actions of the European Union and European Commission: European Green Deal, promoting sustainable resource use and circular economies; Youth Strategy 2019-2027, one of the goals promoted here being "Sustainable Green Europe", empowering youth to take action in the environmental protection; Biodiversity Strategy for 2030, raising awareness on biodiversity among young people and the Erasmus+ Programme which promotes sustainability, climate action, and green skills through its “Environmental sustainability” objective. The goal of our project is to: Increase the green-skills and environmental knowledge of 32 teenagers between 13-17 years old from Romania, Czech Republic, Hungary and North Macedonia, through non-formal activities, by the end of the project. The specific objectives of our project are: 1. Increase the knowledge of 32 teenagers between 13-17 years old from RO, CZ, HU and NMK on climate change, biodiversity, waste management, renewable energy and sustainability, as a foundation to understand environmental challenges, by the end of the project. 2. Develop the competences of 32 teenagers aged 13-17 from RO, CZ, HU and NMK to be able to identify at least three ways through which they can reduce their personal carbon footprint, by the end of the project. 3. Increase the capacity of the partner organisations from RO, CZ, HU and NMK to engage in projects on environmental education, by the end of the project.
