The youth exchange "YOUnity through Diversity" was developed as a direct response to the growing need for intercultural understanding, tolerance, and social inclusion among young people in Europe. In today's context, where stereotypes, prejudices, and discrimination still pose significant challenges to social cohesion, young people often lack safe, structured environments to explore cultural differences and learn how to transform them into shared strengths. Our observation, supported by the realities faced by our partner organisations in Romania, Italy, Poland, and Ukraine, indicated that youth need practical opportunities to gain intercultural competences, develop inclusive attitudes, and become active multipliers of tolerance within their local communities. The project took place in Hârșova, Romania, bringing together 28 participants and group leaders from the four aforementioned countries. The overarching aim of this youth exchange was to explore the concepts of diversity, inclusion, and European unity through the lens of non-formal education, thereby strengthening intercultural dialogue and promoting mutual understanding among young people from different cultural backgrounds. To achieve this overarching aim, we established the following specific objectives for the project: 1. To foster education for diversity and inclusion: We aimed to provide a safe, multicultural space where young people could critically analyze and deconstruct stereotypes, prejudices, and discriminatory behaviors through structured non-formal education activities, interactive simulations, and storytelling. 2. To develop key intercultural and social competences: The project sought to enhance participants' soft skills—specifically intercultural communication, empathy, teamwork, problem-solving, and leadership—enabling them to collaborate effectively and respectfully in diverse environments. 3. To promote active European citizenship and youth empowerment: We wanted to encourage young people to take an active role in their communities. By simulating decision-making processes and debating social barriers, the project aimed to raise awareness of European values—particularly "Unity in Diversity"—and empower participants to engage in democratic life and social inclusion initiatives. 4. To equip participants with creative tools for social change: A major objective was to help youth discover and utilize creative methods (such as theatre, music, visual arts, and awareness campaigns) to advocate for inclusion. We wanted them to return home with practical tools to combat discrimination and promote tolerance in their everyday lives. Ultimately, by implementing "YOUnity through Diversity," we aimed to empower a new generation of open-minded, confident, and active European citizens who are capable of bridging cultural divides and building inclusive communities across borders.
