Objectives

The general objective of the project “Invisible People, Silent Voices” is the reduction of risk and prevention of human trafficking through empowering and improving the knowledge, skills, and competencies of a group of young people from Croatia, the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Serbia, including a certain number of young people from vulnerable social groups. The exchange took place in Serbia (Donji Milanovac) from 17–25 October 2025. The program addressed aspects of human trafficking through topics such as: introduction to basic concepts of human trafficking; the gender dimension of trafficking; human rights violations in trafficking; recruitment methods and trafficking channels (with emphasis on online recruitment and channels). Specific objectives of the exchange were: 1. Raising awareness about the importance of prevention tailored to young people. 2. Developing awareness of social responsibility for creating conditions that enable human trafficking. 3. Empowering the group of young people by developing resilience (personal identity, competencies, risk recognition, development of emotional intelligence). 4. Fostering unity and solidarity by promoting European values of gender equality, interculturality, inclusion, and tolerance. 5. Promoting European standards for trafficking prevention. The general objective was achieved through creative non formal learning methods: “putting oneself in another’s shoes” by recognizing the economic, social, and emotional contexts from which victims come; noticing personal vulnerabilities that could lead someone to become a victim (e.g., recruitment via social networks); strengthening critical thinking (forum theatre, questioning myths about trafficking, gender stereotypes); developing creativity (public performance, scriptwriting, acting); reinforcing existing competencies and identifying new ones. The specific objectives were realized through different program segments. Developing social responsibility was achieved via discussions and activities highlighting social, economic, and structural factors that contribute to trafficking. Empowering youth and building resilience was delivered through workshops focused on strengthening personal identity, emotional intelligence, and risk recognition skills, with emphasis on open communication. Building unity and solidarity occurred through mixed group activities and team building workshops that encouraged community, tolerance, and mutual support. Promotion of European prevention standards was present in experience sharing, dissemination of good practices, and creation of materials for wider distribution. Youth empowerment, empathy, and emotional intelligence were fostered through “entering others’ shoes” workshops and acting exercises, where participants explored perspectives of potential victims and the role of support. In this way, they became aware of their own responsibility and gained skills and ideas to further spread in their communities. Activities during the exchange were specifically designed to highlight the many social, economic, and contextual factors that contribute to human trafficking and the circumstances in which victims may find themselves. Special emphasis was placed on the digital dimension of recruitment after the pandemic, noting that while the internet can facilitate recruitment and trafficking, it also represents a powerful tool for prevention. For this reason, a key product of the exchange was the creation of educational films/video spots about specific situations and prevention, tailored to young people and intended for sharing on social networks. The participation of young people from diverse social groups, the creative and stimulating activities, and the collaborative work further contributed to the development of solidarity and a sense of community. As a result, the project exceeded initial expectations by producing long term effects in strengthening intercultural dialogue, empathy, and a network of young people ready to actively engage in preventing human trafficking.
