Objectives

The aim of our exchange was to lower the barriers to young people’s engagement in democratic issues and to strengthen their confidence that their voices should be taken seriously. Surveys and research have shown that many young people are interested in societal issues, but only a few are actively engaged or have contact with politicians and public officials. Young people want to be involved and have an influence on societal matters, but they must be given the opportunity to participate based on their own conditions and circumstances. In order to reverse this trend, engaged young people in both Svenljunga and Kópavogur in Iceland have expressed a need for new methods and approaches to spark their interest in and engagement with societal issues. Our local political structures currently make it difficult for young people to have real influence, as well as to access and understand political decisions. The purpose and objectives of this exchange were for the youth groups to jointly develop methods that enable them and other young people to participate and exert influence on their own terms, to stimulate interest and engagement in societal issues, and to improve how municipalities and decision-makers communicate with and to young people. Another purpose and objective was to promote young people’s sense of belonging to the European community, where new encounters and experiences foster understanding and tolerance.
