The project was designed as an international youth exchange, implemented in a rural area in Slovenia in collaboration with international partner organizations. It involved young people from various European countries, with a particular focus on youth from rural areas. The primary objective of the project was to empower young people to engage in active and responsible citizenship and to strengthen their role in decision-making processes at local, national, and European levels. The project was based on non-formal learning methods and a participatory approach, incorporating interactive workshops, group work, visits to local best practices, and homestays with host families. This enabled participants to gain firsthand experience of the challenges and opportunities of rural life. A key component of the program was also a structured dialogue between young people and representatives of the local community. The project outcomes included enhanced personal, social, and civic competences among participants, increased confidence in publicly expressing their opinions, a deeper understanding of democratic processes, and a stronger readiness for further civic engagement within local communities. Intercultural collaboration and living together in international groups also fostered a sense of belonging to the European space, improved understanding of shared European values, and reinforced participants’ European identity. Furthermore, the project contributed to strengthening the capacities of the participating organizations in the field of youth work in rural areas and to establishing sustainable partnerships between organizations from different countries.
