Objectives

The youth exchange project “Rediscovering Human Resilience and Survival for Youth” was designed in response to the observation that, due to intensive use of technology and increasing urbanisation, young people have been drifting away from nature and from basic life skills. In today’s context, the rise in screen time and the reduction of direct contact with the natural environment have not only weakened young people’s practical abilities, but have also diminished their psychological resilience in times of crisis and their sensitivity to environmental problems. Through joint analyses carried out by Bolu Abant İzzet Baysal University and partners from different parts of Europe, the need for young people to rediscover self reliance and nature based living skills was clearly identified. The main motivation of the project was to take young people out of their “technological cells” and reconnect them with the survival strategies and wisdom of the first humans. The unique natural landscape of Bolu was used as an open air laboratory for this learning process. By combining the experience of partner organisations in the fields of environment and youth work, the project aimed to enable participants to acquire practical skills such as fire making, shelter building and navigation, while at the same time strengthening transversal competences such as leadership, teamwork and problem solving. Thanks to the intercultural learning environment offered by the Erasmus+ programme, participants from different countries were encouraged to share their own approaches to resilience and to build a common European awareness. During the planning phase, it was prioritised that the activities should go beyond technical training and support young people in internalising concepts such as active citizenship and sustainability. Accordingly, the programme was structured to both enhance the individual capacities of participants and help them become more resilient and sensitive individuals in the face of societal challenges. The project was thus successfully completed as a transformation process in which young people re established their bond with nature, discovered their inner strength, and became able to transfer these gains back to their local communities. Specific objectives of the project: • To develop young people’s basic survival skills in nature through practical, hands on learning. • To reduce technology dependency and encourage direct contact with the natural environment. • To increase environmental awareness, sustainability consciousness and ecological responsibility. • To strengthen social competences such as leadership, crisis management and teamwork. • To foster European solidarity and tolerance through intercultural dialogue. • To support young people’s self confidence and psychological resilience in the face of difficulties.
