The Folk Dance Fiesta project was created to respond to some of the most urgent challenges faced by young people across Europe. The primary goal of the project was to use traditional folk dances and artistic expression as tools for building bridges between cultures, supporting inclusion, and fostering a sense of unity among young people. Through youth work practice, we aimed to empower participants with practical skills and meaningful experiences that would support their growth in a multicultural and interconnected European context. The project focused on several core objectives: 1. Empowering marginalized youth through cultural expression: We aimed to give young people a space to express their cultural identities through traditional folk dances and creative activities. This helped increase their confidence, strengthen their connection to their roots, and encouraged them to be more active in their communities. Within the youth work framework, this process helped participants gain a deeper appreciation for their own backgrounds while learning to respect the identities of others. 2. Promoting social inclusion and intercultural dialogue: The project created an inclusive and open environment where participants from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds could engage in direct intercultural exchange. Shared dance experiences allowed for non-verbal connection and mutual learning. From a youth work perspective, this supported social inclusion and gave space for meaningful dialogue based on shared values rather than differences. 3. Challenging stereotypes and prejudices: By bringing together young people from different countries to collaborate creatively, we tackled preconceived ideas and biases. Youth workers supported this process by facilitating discussions and activities that encouraged open-mindedness. Participants were able to reflect on their own views and challenge negative stereotypes, which contributed to more inclusive attitudes. 4. Developing a shared European identity: We strived to foster a feeling of belonging to a common European space by highlighting both the uniqueness and the interconnectedness of different cultures. As they explored each other’s traditions through dance, participants began to understand their place within a broader European identity—one that values diversity and unity. 5. Equipping young people with life skills and competences: Through the collaborative learning experience, participants developed key life skills such as teamwork, communication, empathy, cultural awareness, and creative thinking. These competences were strengthened through non-formal methods and daily group interaction, preparing participants to play a more active and responsible role in their communities and professional lives. The outcomes we achieved included an increase in participants’ self-esteem and pride in their cultural identities, improved intercultural understanding, and stronger feelings of European unity. Participants left the project with broader perspectives, more inclusive mindsets, and newly gained practical skills that they can apply in their personal development and future careers. Ultimately, the Folk Dance Fiesta project succeeded in creating a safe space for cultural exchange and personal growth, achieving its mission to support the well-being and empowerment of youth while promoting the values of inclusion and shared European identity.
