Objectives

Agriculture is a strategic economic sector of great importance both in terms of meeting basic food needs and being the main supplier for different sectors; and in terms of creating employment and increasing national income. In this context, the agriculture sector directly affects the labor market by providing employment and directly contributes to the labor market. However, during the process of economic development, employment shifts from the agricultural sector to the manufacturing and service sectors. As in the rest of the world, agricultural employment in Turkey is also shifting to the service and manufacturing sectors. In other words, the growth of the manufacturing and service sectors surpasses employment in the agricultural sector. This situation leads to problems related to both the supply of raw materials and basic food needs, as well as employment issues. Especially due to rural-to-urban migration by the younger generation, individuals with low levels of education and insufficient modern agricultural skills and equipment remain in rural areas. Meanwhile, young people who cannot find employment opportunities in urban areas, or who must work for low wages if they do, emerge. This situation, which brings various socio-economic problems, has negative and long-term effects on both the employment rate and quality of young people, as well as on agricultural productivity and sustainability. Regarding the sustainability and productivity of agriculture, the European Union has been implementing the Common Agricultural Policy since 1962. Most recently, the agreement covering the years 2023-2027 demonstrates the importance given to sustainability and productivity in agriculture by implementing the European Green Deal, the Farm to Fork Strategy, and the Biodiversity Strategy. With the world population expected to reach nine billion by 2050, the importance of productivity and employment in agriculture will become much greater. In this regard, based on our research and survey results, it has been determined that young people living in rural areas are migrating to urban areas in search of employment opportunities; the rural population is unaware of and does not implement innovative and modern agricultural practices; they are unaware of rural development supports; productivity in agriculture is low, and costs are high; the employment rate among young people is low, and the level of socio-economic anxiety among young people is high. This research conducted in Turkey, Portugal and Italy has led to the design of our youth project named ''From Rural to Innovation: Sustainability and Qualified Employment in Agriculture with Young People'' which is based on the knowledge and experiences of our partners. Within the scope of this project, during activities lasting six days, a total of thirty-two young people in the target group will be subject to both theoretical and face-to-face training and practices related to modern agricultural practices, productive agriculture, and country-based support projects in the agricultural field. This will encourage them to engage in agriculture, view it as an employment area, and by implementing sustainable agricultural practices, they will become examples and beneficial to themselves, the rural areas, and society. At this point, we expect to achieve the following goals by implementing both the transnational and local activities of our project both in the short and long term: Reducing the rural youth population wanting to migrate to urban areas by 50%. Introducing young people to innovative and modern agricultural practices and ensuring they gain knowledge and experience in this field (100%). Making the agricultural sector more attractive for young people in rural areas (70%). Raising awareness about rural development supports (100%). Increasing the awareness level regarding the significant contribution of agriculture to national and world economies (85%); Additionally, by reaching a wider audience, we aim to: Increase the employment rate in agriculture, thereby ensuring both productivity and sustainability in agriculture and employment for young people. Contribute to reducing the unemployment rate among young people. Increase the recognition of modern agricultural practices among broader audiences.
