Objectives

Thalassemia is a genetically inherited problem that causes severe anemia. However, thalassemia is not a matter of fate; it is a preventable disease, and we aim to prevent the birth of babies with thalassemia by creating a permanent solution to this disease.Thalassemia is a hereditary, preventable blood disease originating from parents. It is a significant public health problem in Mediterranean countries, including Turkey. Although thalassemia is a preventable possibility, at least 365,000 thalassemia patients are born and receive treatment worldwide every year. In Turkey, there are approximately 1,300,000 thalassemia carriers and around 4,500 thalassemia patients. According to the latest information from Hatay, there are 2144 married couples who are carriers and 1918 patients. And thousands of new thalassemia patients are born every year. This spread expands the prevalence seen in Mediterranean countries. The higher the carrier rate in a society, the higher the probability of two couples randomly marrying and having a sick child. Thalassemia is a disease that renders the patient independent for life, reduces their freedom of life, and leads to economic decline. The annual treatment cost for a thalassemia patient in any country is approximately $15,000-$20,000.In line with the aims and priorities of the Erasmus+ Program, it aims to: Raise awareness about thalassemia; Ensure and develop cooperation in the studies on thalassemia conducted by Mediterranean countries; Generate international partnerships and new ideas in the fight against thalassemia; Improve the quality of life; Encourage the participation of disadvantaged groups in social life; Learn about methods of combating this disease in different regions of Europe with the contribution of our partners; Raise awareness about the importance of thalassemia testing for individuals before marriage; and thus, Ensure that thalassemia and other diseases are no longer considered a fate for newborns and that healthy individuals are brought into society. Therapeutic and empathetic approach to patients; Prevention of thalassemia, which spreads through international migration, through international cooperation. And this places a heavy burden on the economy of thalassemia patients, who are prevalent in many parts of Europe.
