Objectives

The project entitled “Refugees' Stories: Make Your Voice Heard with the Human Library” was implemented with the primary objective of strengthening the capacity of youth workers to establish deeper, more meaningful, and empathy-based communication with migrant and refugee youth. The project addressed the persistent challenges of social prejudice, stereotyping, and exclusion by fostering mutual understanding among young people from diverse cultural backgrounds and promoting social inclusion at both individual and community levels. By positioning the Human Library methodology at the core of its approach, the project introduced an innovative, participatory, and interactive dimension to youth work practices. Through this methodology, participants assumed the role of “books” and shared their personal life experiences in a structured and safe environment. This process created trust-based and transformative dialogue spaces, enabling participants to directly engage with lived realities, question preconceived notions, and reflect critically on their own attitudes and biases. A key focus of the project was the capacity building of youth workers. Participants received structured training on the fundamental principles of the Human Library methodology, with particular emphasis on ethical considerations, facilitation skills, and safeguarding. Complementary workshops on active listening, empathy development, and intercultural communication were delivered to ensure that youth workers could effectively apply the methodology in diverse youth work settings. In parallel, thematic sessions aimed at deconstructing stereotypes and fostering intercultural dialogue, including cultural interaction evenings, were organized to reinforce learning outcomes and encourage peer-to-peer exchange. The project also actively supported migrant and refugee youth workers by providing them with opportunities to share their own stories and participate more visibly in social and professional life. To enhance visibility, creativity, and digital competence, participants were introduced to digital tools such as Canva for designing Human Library book covers, as well as artificial intelligence–based tools for producing songs, illustrations, and digital content for the project website. These activities contributed to participants’ digital empowerment and supported innovative dissemination of project results. As tangible outcomes a practical handbook on the Human Library methodology for youth workers was developed. The handbook provides step-by-step guidance, practical examples, and recommendations on how the methodology can be effectively integrated into youth work and non-formal education contexts. This output supports the sustainability and transferability of project results beyond the project duration.Beyond individual skill development the project delivered comprehensive input on social inclusion strategies and anti-discrimination approaches, thereby strengthening participants’ professional competences in addressing exclusion, inequality, and cultural diversity in youth work. Youth empowerment and active participation were consistently promoted throughout the project with a strong emphasis on recognising and valuing social and cultural diversity as a resource. The project achieved a lasting and inclusive methodological contribution to the field of youth work by equipping youth workers with innovative tools, enhancing intercultural understanding, and fostering more inclusive, engaging, and sustainable youth work practices in line with Erasmus+ Youth priorities.
