Objectives

Art and Nature Walks together was organized to develop young people’s connection to both nature and to creative expression. Given the technology driven, fast-paced world we live in, we felt young people were being increasingly disconnected from nature and thus environmental sustainability; combining art and nature would serve to foster creativity and nurture a deeper sense of environmental responsibility. In order to foster this connection, the project aimed to develop activities that provided participants with possibilities to express their creativity through various mediums such as painting, drawing, sound, and street art–and to help them discover themselves through artistic practice. Additionally, the project focused on developing soft skills like teamwork and collaboration through group tasks, such as filmmaking and participative mural painting. In addition, essential skills were also developed to help youth better present themselves in an ever-evolving labor market. An important part of the project was providing accessibility and knowledge transfer to economically disadvantaged participants that might lack entry to cultural and creative exchange programs. Nature walks with engaging experts on biodiversity helped raise awareness on the beauty of nature; discovering biodiversity helped foster a sense of responsibility for environmental protection; daily journalling allowed reflection while the project curriculum provided an opportunity to create in various media and art forms; collaboration and teamwork was inspired through the creation of a public mural in Vienna’s Floridsdorf district; the artistic activities, film screenings and marketing activities provided youth with opportunities to discover themselves, develop labor related creative and presentation skills. The project linked with Erasmus+ goals by promoting awareness and sustainability and the EU’s priority of addressing climate change by encouraging action. It also fostered a deep sense of creativity and innovation given the participants were able to express themselves through nature inspired art; resulting in the promotion of active citizenship, individual growth and appreciation of diversity (given the various cultures that spent time together throughout the project).
