The project Upcycling for a Greener Tomorrow was implemented with the overall aim of supporting young people in developing environmentally responsible attitudes, practical sustainability-related competences, and a stronger sense of active citizenship through non-formal learning. The project responded to the increasing environmental challenges related to waste generation, unsustainable consumption patterns, and limited practical engagement of young people in environmental action. By addressing these challenges, the project aimed to contribute to long-term behavioural change among young people and to strengthen their role as active contributors to sustainable development. A central objective of the project was to raise awareness among young people about environmental issues by moving beyond theoretical discussions and providing practical learning opportunities. The project was designed to enable participants to better understand the environmental impact of waste and consumption by directly engaging in upcycling activities. Through hands-on work with commonly discarded materials, participants were encouraged to rethink waste as a resource and to explore sustainable alternatives that can be realistically applied in everyday life. This approach aimed to make sustainability more tangible, accessible, and relevant to young people from different backgrounds. From a youth work perspective, the project placed strong emphasis on non-formal education methodologies that promote experiential learning, active participation, and peer-to-peer exchange. Another key objective was to create a learning environment in which young people could actively shape their learning process, express their ideas freely, and learn through cooperation rather than passive instruction. The project aimed to strengthen participants’ motivation to learn by engaging them in creative processes that combined environmental education with artistic expression and practical problem-solving. The development of transversal competences represented an additional core objective of the project. Through group-based activities and collaborative tasks, participants were supported in improving skills such as creativity, critical thinking, communication, teamwork, and adaptability. Working in multicultural teams allowed young people to develop intercultural competences and to gain experience in cooperating with peers from different cultural, social, and national contexts. These competences are considered essential for young people’s personal development, employability, and active participation in democratic and civic life. Another important objective of the project was to foster active citizenship and social responsibility among participants. The project aimed to empower young people to take ownership of sustainability-related initiatives and to see themselves as capable of influencing positive change within their communities. By involving participants in the planning, implementation, and reflection of activities, the project encouraged a sense of responsibility and initiative. Participants were motivated to continue promoting environmentally responsible behaviour after the exchange by sharing their knowledge, organising local activities, and raising awareness among their peers. The project also aimed to strengthen international cooperation and mutual understanding by bringing together young people from several European and neighbouring countries to work on a shared environmental topic. Through intercultural dialogue and collaboration, participants gained insight into different approaches to sustainability and waste management, while developing respect for diverse perspectives and practices. This international dimension contributed to a stronger sense of European solidarity and highlighted the importance of cross-border cooperation in addressing global challenges such as environmental degradation and climate change. In addition, the project sought to align with broader European priorities related to sustainability, environmental protection, and youth participation. By focusing on upcycling and responsible consumption, the project aimed to support the promotion of environmentally conscious lifestyles and to encourage young people to integrate sustainability principles into their daily routines. The project also aimed to demonstrate how non-formal youth work can effectively contribute to environmental education and to the development of responsible, engaged, and informed young citizens.Overall, the objectives of Upcycling for a Greener Tomorrow were to increase environmental awareness, develop practical and transferable skills, strengthen key competences relevant for personal and civic life, and empower young people to act as agents of change.
