Objectives

In recent years, the growing disconnection between young people and the natural environment has become a pressing concern. This trend has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, which significantly reduced opportunities for outdoor activities and social engagement. Coupled with the rapid advancement of technology, young people are spending more time indoors, leading to physical inactivity, diminished social interactions, and a weakening bond with the natural world. This disconnection has profound consequences not only for their physical health but also for their mental well-being. Research consistently shows that regular interaction with nature can alleviate stress, anxiety, and depression while fostering a sense of purpose, resilience, and belonging. Recognizing these challenges, our project seeks to address this gap by creating opportunities for young people to reconnect with nature, thereby enhancing their mental health and environmental awareness. The primary objective of the project, Protect the Environment and your Mental Health with your Connection with Nature (PEMEHECON), is to cultivate a meaningful and enduring connection between young people and the natural environment. By engaging youth in diverse nature-based activities, we aim to inspire a deep appreciation for the environment and foster a sense of environmental stewardship. Creative methods such as art, theater, yoga, and storytelling will be integrated with natural elements to create an enjoyable and impactful learning experience. These activities are designed to ignite curiosity, creativity, and a profound sense of wonder about the natural world, while simultaneously emphasizing the importance of sustainable living and environmental responsibility. A key component of the project is empowering young people to become active participants in their communities by initiating and contributing to local environmental projects. This hands-on involvement not only nurtures a sense of responsibility and ownership but also instills valuable life skills such as teamwork, leadership, critical thinking, and problem-solving. These skills are essential for their personal development and future roles as active, informed citizens who contribute meaningfully to society. From a youth work perspective, PEMEHECON aims to enhance the competencies of youth workers by equipping them with innovative tools and methodologies that blend environmental education with mental health promotion. Youth workers will be trained to use nature as a dynamic medium to address key issues, including mental well-being, resilience, and environmental awareness. The project will also foster collaboration among youth workers from different regions, facilitating the exchange of best practices and encouraging the development of creative approaches to youth engagement. Moreover, the project aligns with the overarching goals of Erasmus+ by promoting intercultural dialogue, cooperation, and the exchange of ideas among youth workers and young people from diverse cultural and geographical backgrounds. Through these exchanges, participants will gain broader perspectives, build mutual understanding, and develop innovative solutions to shared challenges. Ultimately, PEMEHECON aspires to create lasting change by inspiring a long-term shift in how young people interact with their environment. By fostering a love for nature and an understanding of its critical role in personal and community well-being, the project seeks to nurture a generation of environmental advocates and stewards. These young leaders will be equipped not only with the knowledge and skills to protect the environment but also with the resilience and mental clarity to thrive in their personal lives and inspire others to do the same. Through its multifaceted approach, PEMEHECON will address pressing issues at the intersection of environmental sustainability and mental health, leaving a lasting impact on participants, youth workers, and the broader communities they serve.
