When we designed and implemented the project A Cultural Case: Sports, our main aim was to look at sports beyond competition and physical activity, and to explore them as a cultural expression shaped by history, daily life, and social values. We wanted to create awareness that sports are not universal in the way they are practiced or understood, but deeply influenced by the culture in which they develop. One of our key objectives was to reach youth workers and support them with knowledge and practical experience about the role of sports in personal and social development. By combining theoretical sessions with hands-on activities, we aimed to provide youth workers with concrete examples they could later apply in their own work with young people. We also wanted to broaden young people’s understanding of sports by introducing traditional and lesser-known games from different cultures, many of which are at risk of being forgotten. Another important goal of the project was to help participants understand how culture shapes sports and, in return, how sports reflect social structures, values, and even economic differences within societies. Through this approach, young people were encouraged to see sports as a mirror of cultural identity rather than only a physical practice. At the same time, we aimed to promote inclusive attitudes in sports, raising awareness about equality and challenging sexist perspectives that still exist in this field. Additionally, we aimed to support promoting environmental awareness through sustainable and eco-friendly practices, encouraging youth workers to adopt responsible approaches in their activities. Inclusion and diversity were also essential elements of the project, with a strong focus on equal participation, especially for youth workers with fewer opportunities, and on creating a diverse learning environment. In addition, the project contributed to the objectives of Youth Workers Mobility by offering non-formal learning opportunities, supporting professional development. The project also aimed at digital transformation by integrating online tools and digital methods, helping participants strengthen their digital competences in youth work. By addressing the traditional sports of the partner countries both in theory and in practice, the project sought to change perceptions, encourage active participation in sports, and strengthen the link between cultural understanding and healthy lifestyles.
