The project “Conflict Transformation through Taekwondo” was implemented between 4 - 12 December 2025 in Stara Zagora, Bulgaria, as an Erasmus+ youth exchange. A total of 33 young participants aged between 15 and 25 took part in the mobility – 9 from Bulgaria and 8 participants each from Romania, Italy and Greece. Out of them, 20 were young people with fewer opportunities, for whom the project ensured equal access and full inclusion. The project was developed in response to clearly identified needs among young people in the participating countries. Partner organisations reported similar challenges: increased social tension among youth, difficulties in managing emotions, lack of constructive communication skills, and social isolation affecting young people with fewer opportunities. In today’s social environment, conflicts are often expressed through impulsiveness, aggression or withdrawal, rather than dialogue and conscious behaviour. This highlighted the need for practical, experiential and interactive methods to develop peaceful conflict resolution skills. Building on the long-standing experience of Taekwondo Club “Avgusta” in youth work and in using sport as a tool for personal development, the project integrated Taekwondo as a non-formal educational methodology. Taekwondo provides not only physical training, but also a value-based system grounded in respect, discipline, self-control and inner resilience. These principles were used as a foundation for transforming conflict-driven behaviour into conscious and responsible action. The project pursued the following strategic objectives: 1. Development of conflict transformation skills - to provide participants with practical tools to recognise, analyse and constructively resolve conflicts through a combination of sport-based activities, role plays, group discussions and reflection sessions. 2. Enhancement of emotional intelligence and self-regulation - to support young people in understanding the connection between emotions, reactions and consequences, and to develop their ability to exercise self-control and make responsible decisions in challenging situations. 3. Promotion of social inclusion - to create a safe, inclusive and supportive international environment for all 33 participants, ensuring equal access, active participation and full engagement in all activities. 4. Development of key competences - the project aimed to strengthen communication skills, teamwork, leadership, adaptability, resilience and responsibility – competences directly linked to the European Key Competences for Lifelong Learning framework. 5. Strengthening intercultural dialogue and European identity - through joint activities, cultural evenings, mixed-national teams and visits to cultural and historical sites, participants developed respect for cultural diversity and reinforced their sense of European belonging. 6. Promoting sport as a tool for peace and active citizenship - the project demonstrated how sport can be used as an effective instrument to encourage non-violent behaviour, social responsibility and active participation in society, in line with the priorities of the Erasmus+ Programme. By integrating structured Taekwondo training sessions, thematic workshops, reflection circles and intercultural activities, the project showed that real strength is not expressed through aggression, but through self-control, awareness and the ability to resolve conflicts peacefully. In the long term, the project aimed to create young ambassadors of positive communication and peaceful behaviour within their local communities, encouraging them to apply what they learned and contribute to building more inclusive and tolerant societies at both local and European levels.
