Objectives

The Cultural Bridges for Inclusion project is rooted in the urgent need to address social exclusion among European youth by promoting cultural participation, mobility, and intercultural dialogue. Despite the European Union’s commitment to fostering social cohesion through culture, young people from marginalized backgrounds—including those from low-income families, rural areas, ethnic minorities, and migrant communities—face significant barriers to accessing cultural experiences. This exclusion has far-reaching consequences, limiting their opportunities for personal development, active citizenship, and a sense of belonging to the European community. By prioritizing inclusion, this project aims to dismantle the obstacles that prevent disadvantaged youth from engaging with and contributing to Europe’s cultural diversity. One of the most pressing issues is the socio-economic divide in cultural participation. The Eurostat Cultural Statistics Report (2022) highlights that young people from disadvantaged backgrounds are significantly less likely to visit museums, attend cultural events, or participate in artistic activities compared to their more privileged peers. The financial cost of cultural engagement, including travel, entry fees, and accommodation, creates barriers that disproportionately affect lower-income youth. The European Pillar of Social Rights affirms that access to culture is a fundamental right, yet this right remains out of reach for many. The Cultural Bridges for Inclusion project directly addresses this issue by ensuring that financial constraints do not prevent young people from experiencing European culture through structured mobility experiences. Another critical factor contributing to cultural exclusion is geographical isolation. According to the European Commission’s Report on Rural Youth (2022), young people in rural and remote areas have significantly fewer opportunities to engage with cultural institutions and heritage sites. Cultural infrastructure—such as theaters, museums, and historical landmarks—is often concentrated in urban centers, leaving rural youth disconnected from the broader European cultural landscape. This lack of access not only limits their cultural experiences but also reinforces a sense of detachment from the European identity. Cultural Bridges for Inclusion seeks to bridge this gap by actively recruiting participants from rural and remote areas, providing them with opportunities to explore cultural diversity beyond their local communities. In addition to economic and geographical barriers, young people from migrant and ethnic minority backgrounds often face cultural exclusion due to systemic discrimination and a lack of representation. The EU Anti-Racism Action Plan 2020-2025 notes that many European cultural institutions do not adequately reflect the diversity of the populations they serve, leading to feelings of alienation among minority youth. Cultural heritage sites and narratives often emphasize dominant historical perspectives while overlooking the contributions of diverse communities. This exclusion perpetuates social divisions and reinforces a sense of "otherness." The Cultural Bridges for Inclusion project responds to this challenge by ensuring that cultural mobility experiences highlight diverse perspectives and histories. Participants will engage with cultural practitioners and heritage sites that represent the full spectrum of Europe’s multicultural history, fostering a more inclusive understanding of European identity. Another significant barrier to inclusion is the lack of accessible cultural experiences for young people with disabilities. The Strategy for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities 2021-2030 stresses the importance of cultural accessibility, yet many heritage sites and artistic spaces remain physically or socially inaccessible. This exclusion prevents young people with disabilities from fully participating in cultural life. The Cultural Bridges for Inclusion project incorporates inclusive design principles, ensuring that all activities and locations are accessible to participants with diverse needs. Whether through assistive technologies, sign language interpretation, or adapted learning materials, the project guarantees that every participant, regardless of ability, can fully engage in cultural exploration. Furthermore, digital exclusion exacerbates disparities in cultural participation. The Digital Education Action Plan 2021-2027 highlights that young people from disadvantaged backgrounds often lack access to digital tools and training, limiting their ability to engage with cultural content online. In an increasingly digitalized world, cultural narratives are shaped and shared through digital media platforms, yet many marginalized youth do not have the skills or resources to participate in these conversations. The Cultural Bridges for Inclusion project addresses this gap by integrating a digital storytelling component, equipping par
